Default Cover Art damage

Hey members,

I've never had to post on this topic so I'm not too sure where this thread belongs so forgive me on that. My problem is with my blu covers. I recently moved from an apartment to a duplex and built my own movie shelf in my room dedicated to my movies. Lately I've noticed that random blu's have been "diagnosed" with a terrible sickness of cover art damage. What I mean by "damage" may be nothing to some, but to those who cherish their collection will understand, the paper cover-art has been "warping" on some blu's, basically getting this ripple effect and I have no clue how it has been happening. I'm guessing some humidity or condensation issue, my girlfriend has stated it may be due to the shower steam getting it's way into the room, but I wanted to know if anyone of you guys or gals have had this issue before and how you handled it. If it makes a difference I live in Lodi, CA so we just started getting nasty rainy weather.

Any info or help you can provide will be a big plus. Thank you guys.

Here is a pic of my shelf to show how I have them stored.

It happens. Your best way to combat it would be put a dehumidifier in the room and have it running especially in the spring and summer.

Sounds like you already found the culprit. I believe you can Iron the covers back to flat if you're careful. Just use a dry iron with a thin piece of fabric over the paper and I see no reason why it wouldn't work. I'd test it on a cover that's not important just to be sure, but it should help if nothing else.

I contacted our landlord and are going to see what it might be, but the shower steam is a very possible problem. There are many covers that are warped and i'm going to give the iron trick a try. She used her hair straightener on a few already.

Also the thinner the paper the more susceptible it is to humidity. Thicker paper has more resistance. Studios used to use a heavier stock paper for their inserts but now they are going the cheaper route and they use the thinnest paper out there to mitigate their costs.

Yeah it just sucks because I've never had this problem when I lived at an apartment. We just started getting the really cold and rainy weather so maybe it's that idk. Yeah as to the studio's putting out thinner paper i have noticed some of the thinner ones being affected.

I'd say that window right next to them is probably a factor also.

It's more likely the current weather. It appears your area has had high humidity lately and a majority of the days the past couple of weeks have had 100% humidity. The temperatures are low enough that you don't have to use the a/c which dehumidifies the air. By any chance is your shelf on an exterior wall and if so is the wall cold to the touch? If so, my recommendation would be to more your collection to an interior wall or a different part of the house.

Movies will get damaged overtime, it's unavoidable.

Definitely humidity.

It is possible that it's coming from your shower, but it could also be due to the weather.

I live in long beach and the same thing is happening, not just to cheap blu rays, my criterions, Arrow videos, Oop twilight time and Code Red's, let me know if the flat iron works, my girlfriend thinks I'm crazy and thinks their fine, but to a collector who appreciates not just the disc but the entire packaging, I mean shit that's why you pay extra for all those expensive blus, i recently bought plastic sleeves, but that is a no no, as that can trap moisture in, also your best bet and what I'm doing is using a dehumidifier, running the heat when cold, and using heavy books to flatten out the art sheets, let me know how the iron works out!!! Ps, I know I'm a month late on this
