Default Vudu to add "extras" to Sony movies

Looks like Sony and Vudu are partnering to make digital movie versions equal to their disc-based counterparts including the special features and extras...this is exciting news!

http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/23/vud...igital-extras/

Key paragraph for those who don't want to click:

"The Sony-Vudu partnership is designed to give users similar features to long-available DVD extras through movies purchased on the Vudu marketplace. The Vudu Extras+ offering will enable users to watch deleted scenes, featurettes, and movie trivia, just like the usual DVD or Blu-ray extras."

Another critical advantage that Blu-rays once had over digital content is eliminated. Other studios will begin to duplicate this move by Sony.

I just checked my District 9 VUDU copy and those extras are there. There are a bunch of deleted scenes, clips, and featurettes. Plus the trailer. Sony Blu-rays and DVDs almost never include those. Not a bad addition by VUDU.

Great news for folks that enjoy watching movies on Vudu. My biggest complaint with Vudu was the lack of special features which I almost always check out when they're offered on a disc I'm watching.

Probably not good news for the bluray format in the long-term that the pioneer of bluray is now pioneering in the streaming realm.

Yeah, just think how extinct Blu-rays will become, when we have the option to download all those extra interviews and BTS features to our digital movies separately...

(And that's coming from someone who does watch them.)

Looks like Vudu added a link under collections to make it easier to see which titles have extras+:

Still a advantage to Blu-ray for the most part (I don't know of any iTunes Extras which had a commentary included other than the iTunes exclusive Star Trek Into Darkness' Enchanced Commentary, which was a separate movie essentially).

Hopefully Disney (which does have iTunes Extras available for many of their films, and some movies have digital exclusive bonus features) does make special features available for Vudu in Extras+. And hopefully UV adopts some sort of system to allow for extras to be accessible with a UV title (but first they need to work on making sure all UV providers support captioning/subtitles).

Just want to make sure, the only way to view these extras is through pc/mac right?

I can't find it anywhere on the vudu app on my ps3

Until these features are available within the Vudu app, I don't really find them that impressive. Much like iTunes extras, they are nice, but would be far more impressive if implemented within the applications.

I have the old model appletv in my bedroom and it can play the iTunes extras and iTunes lp content. The big difference between the old and new models is a hard drive so maybe that's the problem with the new models.

Really? That's interesting to know. Now I'm curious if I'm just behind, I have newer AppleTVs which just rely on streaming. Is it when you connect to your computer for streaming that they are available? or are they also available within viewing your film collection on your purchased page?

You can download the movie and the extra's to your computer hard drive then air play the extras from iTunes on your computer to your Apple TV.

It's the really old model (the bit flat grey one) so it's only available by streaming from your computer.

I believe iTunes Extras and iTunes LPs use web browser technology to render the content. The original Apple TV used a stripped-down version of OS X (Mac), but the newer models use a version of iOS (mobile devices). They probably got iTunes Extras for relatively small development effort when it was OS X-based, but they'd need to do more work to port it to the iOS versions.
