I can't wait to see this - 'theatrically' - the film opens here in the DC area at the AFI Silver on the 5th of July (which incidentally is denoted as bluray projection - huh? the Silver's new DCP unit's debut in July anyways - what's up with that?)

Can't wait to see this. Neil Jordan is one of the greatest (and sadly, most underappreciated) filmmakers working. We need more of his films on Blu-ray.

It's amazing how street dates are announced so quickly. Doesn't this discourage people from trying to catch certain movies in theaters at all?

Why didn't you like this movie, I've got it on pre-order, blind-buy? However, I do like

movies.

I was thinking this, Stoker, The East, Orphan Black, would be some good films to buy!

The East and Stoker, yes. However, I wouldn't recommend a blind buy of this film at all. I saw an hour of it and nothing spectacular happened. These two girls are 200 year old vampires and the only interesting thing that happened in the one hour I witnessed was three people dying and just a lot of bland back and forth dialogue.

Orphan Black sounds like a hit-or-miss television show.

Sounds like another free torrent download for me and cancelling my pre-order of the nice Zavvi steelbook then if thats the case.

I liked this a lot better than I was expecting to: for one, the melodramatic elements chagrined about in respectable reviews I've read weren't as damagingly overwhelming as I had been prepared for.

Might it be un-wieldy or over-ambitious, particularly in its attempt to transmute a narrative through two disparate eras, with concerns of femininity and vampirism? Perhaps, but I feel the direction and acting (Gemma Arterton - new crush alert!) kept it far enough out of the deep end
[Show spoiler], with only the contemporary lovestory with Saorise Ronan's character and the sick boy really pushing its luck--and I might have liked to have seen more done with the Brotherhood, but it is appropriately mysterious in the finished film
.

I've seen only a handful of Neil Jordan's pictures (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game), but I'm a fan of his direction, and his means of establishing atmosphere: muted, with dark and sanguine moods that match the frequent overcast of his vistas. The seaside environs here brim with cool, salty vitality.

But it is slow. It's more of a (very) arthouse vampire film rather than an 'answer' to the Twilight's or other self-such modern horror films. Not wholly spectacular, but a solid watch that I enjoyed.

I really like Jordan's The Company of Wolves (which is available on Blu-ray in the UK). I liked Interview with the Vampire at the time it came out, but I don't think it has aged well. I really wanted to see Byzantium, but it never played anywhere near me (it seemed to open in NY and LA and that was it) and I don't have cable. There doesn't seem to be any legal way to watch this unless you're a cable subscriber.

Just watched this from amazon VOD for $4 (had coupon). I wanted to see it before blind buying just in case, and now I definitely will! Hoping there is a commentary and some making of's...visually it's striking, with a haunting score, and Ronan's ethereal beauty simply radiates her heartbreak. The story is reminiscent of Interview with the Vampire (this is also told with a bit of voiceover as Eleanor writes in a journal her story). But the narrative is weaved in and out of flashback/reality in a somewhat original way and I did not get bored. Though some may find it slow going in the beginning, I actually wish it had explored more of the girls' past. There was a bit of love interest for Ronan's character that I felt was a bit forced, perhaps because the chemistry wasn't really there very much with her and the overly awkward, near mumbling, drenched in freckles Caleb Landry Jones (most recently in the directorial effort by Brandon Cronenberg, Antiviral).

But again, overall, I enjoyed this film very much!

Finally got to see this and loved it as well. The third act is somewhat anticlimactic (the entire final confrontation should have taken place on the very striking black island just to make it stronger visually, I think), but the atmosphere is fantastic, the visuals probably the most beautifully composed of Jordan's career (love the shot early on of the flaming apartment curtains billowing while the two women escape far below) and the performances likewise very strong. Can't wait to own the Blu
