I liked this a lot better than I was expecting to: for one, the melodramatic elements chagrined about in respectable reviews I've read weren't as damagingly overwhelming as I had been prepared for.
Might it be un-wieldy or over-ambitious, particularly in its attempt to transmute a narrative through two disparate eras, with concerns of femininity and vampirism? Perhaps, but I feel the direction and acting (Gemma Arterton - new crush alert!) kept it far enough out of the deep end [Show spoiler] . I've seen only a handful of Neil Jordan's pictures (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game), but I'm a fan of his direction, and his means of establishing atmosphere: muted, with dark and sanguine moods that match the frequent overcast of his vistas. The seaside environs here brim with cool, salty vitality. But it is slow. It's more of a (very) arthouse vampire film rather than an 'answer' to the Twilight's or other self-such modern horror films. Not wholly spectacular, but a solid watch that I enjoyed. Last edited by Cinemach; 07-26-2013 at 08:32 PM. |

I really like Jordan's The Company of Wolves (which is available on Blu-ray in the UK). I liked Interview with the Vampire at the time it came out, but I don't think it has aged well. I really wanted to see Byzantium, but it never played anywhere near me (it seemed to open in NY and LA and that was it) and I don't have cable. There doesn't seem to be any legal way to watch this unless you're a cable subscriber.

Just watched this from amazon VOD for $4 (had coupon). I wanted to see it before blind buying just in case, and now I definitely will! Hoping there is a commentary and some making of's...visually it's striking, with a haunting score, and Ronan's ethereal beauty simply radiates her heartbreak. The story is reminiscent of Interview with the Vampire (this is also told with a bit of voiceover as Eleanor writes in a journal her story). But the narrative is weaved in and out of flashback/reality in a somewhat original way and I did not get bored. Though some may find it slow going in the beginning, I actually wish it had explored more of the girls' past. There was a bit of love interest for Ronan's character that I felt was a bit forced, perhaps because the chemistry wasn't really there very much with her and the overly awkward, near mumbling, drenched in freckles Caleb Landry Jones (most recently in the directorial effort by Brandon Cronenberg, Antiviral).
But again, overall, I enjoyed this film very much! |

Finally got to see this and loved it as well. The third act is somewhat anticlimactic (the entire final confrontation should have taken place on the very striking black island just to make it stronger visually, I think), but the atmosphere is fantastic, the visuals probably the most beautifully composed of Jordan's career (love the shot early on of the flaming apartment curtains billowing while the two women escape far below) and the performances likewise very strong. Can't wait to own the Blu
