Default Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) (Collector's Edition) - April 28, 2020

Quote:
Synopsis
"This brilliant black comedy doesn't just dazzle; it stings." – Rolling Stone

Adapted from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross shows David Mamet at his searing, profane best. A group of Chicago real-estate salesmen-cum-

con artists live on the edge. Life is good for the one on a roll. For the rest, life hangs in the balance. There is no room for losers. A-B-C: Always Be Closing, sell or go under, is the salesman's mantra. With the pressure on, so begins a rainy night of cutthroat business and shattered lives.

Delivering an Academy Award®-nominated performance*, Al Pacino (Scent Of A Woman), plays the fast-talking Ricky Roma, alongside Jack Lemmon (Mister Roberts, Save The Tiger) giving a phenomenal performance as the veteran Shelley "The Machine" Levene, struggling to keep his neck above water. A star-studded ensemble cast features Alec Baldwin (The Cooler), Ed Harris (Apollo 13, Pollock) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Argo).

*1992: Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Glengarry Glen Ross

Bonus Features:

NEW 4K Transfer From The Original Camera Negative
NEW A Conversation With Director James Foley
NEW "God Bless Ricky Roma" – Actor Joe Mantegna Remembers Working With David Mamet
Audio Commentary With James Foley
Audio Commentary With Actor Jack Lemmon
Scenes With Bonus Audio Commentary With Actors Alec Baldwin And Alan Arkin, Cinematographer Juan Ruiz Anchía And Production Designer Jane Musky

Love this movie. Now the question is, remastered or not?

The special features on the previous release are great.

Not sure what the selling point will be unless there’s a significantly improved transfer.

I think the film is part of the Westchester Films catalog, so Lionsgate's rights must have expired.

The blu-ray included the one full-length commentary from James Foley.

The DVD had a second, scene-specific audio commentary with actors Alan Arkin and Alec Baldwin, cinematographer Juan Ruiz Anchia and
production designer Jane Musky, dropped from the Blu.

The LD had a commentary from Jack Lemmon, as well as a different commentary from James Foley.

I think the laserdisc had other small features which were dropped. The DVD also has something called "J. Roy: New And Used Furniture", apparently a short film. This is a short doc shot in the 1970's about a salesman -- vaguely interesting, I suppose, but not really connected with the film at all, so that's the sort of feature I don't mind dropping.

But one of only a few commentaries Lemmon ever recorded? I would definitely want to hear that if they could license it.

The laserdisc had nothing else but the two commentaries.

Being fair to Indy, I don't count text-based extras or photo galleries as dropped extras, so as a response to me, he's still correct.

The Today Show did a 5 part series on the stars, IIRC. I have recordings of Harris and Pacino but missed the others.

That should be included...

Was that contemporaneous with the theatrical release or for an anniversary? Just curious.

Commentaries are for closers only.

Oh, I don't either. I was just being a smart aleck because I had that LD and remember the hard copy of the play being included with it. That's why I included the "winky face" at the end. No harm, no foul!

Glengarry Glen Ross was produced by Zupnik Enterprises and GGR, but theatrical and video distribution rights were scattered about worldwide. In the US, New Line Cinema was the US theatrical distributor but did not pick up video and TV rights, which went went to Live Entertainment and through the various mergers of Artisan/Trimark and so forth explains how the most recent BD and streaming release was through Lionsgate (Ironically, the New Line Cinema logo remains intact on all of Live and Artisan/Lionsgate's releases).

My hunch tells me Lionsgate's rights expired (as did Warner's theatrical rights), hence why the BD went OOP so quickly and also got pulled from streaming. This development means the rights are with the films producers, who were willing to licence it out to Shout Factory

Rank was the UK distributor, which lead to the Carlton DVD and the ITV Blu-ray releases using the same US based master. Also ironic that the ITV release went OOP, as their UK rights inherited from Rank likely expired. There is a more recent 2017 BD from Odyssey Video/Three Wolves, who probably licensed from the producers. Specs and info about the newer UK BD is sparse, especially in regards to the transfer and PQ.
