I've been reading over on the AVS (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1063833) forums and based on the pics their appears to be a huge difference particularly in contrast.
I read that the AVC version is encased in the cases that have the "branded" Blu-ray logo. Where as the MPEG-2 version just has the painted on logo at the top of the case. Which I own but I saw The Descent w/ the branded logo at my local Futureshop. Can any AVC owners confirm this PLEASE. Last edited by Eagle_23; 05-17-2009 at 07:21 PM. |

On second thought I think I'll just import the Australian version.
I mean just look at these pic's. http://www.criticalomen.com/comparisonthedescent17.html http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...063833&page=10 Now how do I import & are all the AUS versions AVC encoded? Hhmmm.... Last edited by Eagle_23; 05-17-2009 at 07:55 PM. |

You can order it from here. The AUS version of "The Descent" is AVC encoded with DTS-HD MA 5.1. |

The Australian one looks terrible!! The contrast is completely wrong.
look at the saturation in these two; US Version AUS Version The AUS version's colours are wrong, look at the girl on the far right, her jacket should not be blue!!!!!!! |

I disagree, I think the AUS is far more accurate. They're in a cave, it should be dark. Also, the colors look natural and not washed out like the US releases. Supposedly, the UK color is what the director wanted, but that's just what I had read over on AVS. I've owned the US MPEG2, US AVC and the AUS AVC. AUS is the best copy, IMO. It also shows the most detail, by far. If you're a grain lover, go with the AVC version, preferrably AUS. If you hate grain, go with US MPEG2.

I've seen both the US versions...
I netflixed the AVC long ago and then picked up the MPEG at Walmart for $10. I can enjoy the film and may watch it a few more times eventually but I wasn't going to spend more than $10 on this particular movie. DNR was applied perhaps to the MPEG version but I think the end result is it looks better,... this is likely why the AVC version was discontinued. -Brian |

The US AVC version is more preferable imo. Mainly because it has a slightly darker contrast as well as a little more detail. But I agree that the AUS version looks the best because it has an even darker contrast, meaning when their in the caves it actually looks dark like it should. I'm kinda on the edge as to whether or not a double dip is really worth it seeing as I just bought the MPEG-2 version.

The AUS version looks 10 times better in all aspects and as far as the arguement goes from a few posts back here jacket is blue I don't know what your looking at lol. Anywho being that I own the Descent in what I would believe is the MPEG-2 version.

I don't if this helps, but I have THE DESCENT with the branded blu ray on top of the case. I don't know if it is AVC coded, but we got it imported from USA. Generally the picture has better depth than DVD version, and the contrast is not bad, but what surprised us was the amount of dirt, specks, and stringy threads running through some or many scenes. We always wonder why the distributors could not give it some thorough cleaning for many of today's releases.

I recently posted shots from the US version with the 'painted on' BR logo.
Looks fine to me..... https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1471 http://www.somniumxxx.biz/br_screenc...descent/large/ |
