Happy to finally see an English friendly BD of this after the French release in their Godard boxset, unfortunately only has archival interviews and nothing newly conducted.

This is actually my favorite Godard, and I have been dreaming about adding it to my blu-ray collection for years now.

I was aware of this film, but didn't know what it's about. After reading the synopsis on Criterion.com, it immediately sparked my interest. Will end up blind-buying it.

I believe I read that Godard disavowed all his films before a certain point, sometime in the 70s, I think. As I understand it, he refuses to give any interviews about his classic films or discuss them in any way. So newly conducted interviews wouldn't be possible, except maybe with Anna Karina.

I agree. I've got the Japanese BD but a 4k transfer from Criterion was more than I dared hope for.

I can finally retire my ancient Fox Lorber DVD. This film is criminally underseen and a more than worthy followup to Breathless. Godard's Les Carabiners next?

I'll likely keep the DVD only for the commentary, which was short but quite good as I recall.

I literally cannot contain my excitement for this release. It's one of my favorite films ever made.

Blind bought and I just didn’t connect with it at all. first Godard film I didn’t enjoy watching. The supplements are very underwhelming, so is there any good analysis somewhere of this film?

A lot of cultural specificity in this one, having to do with the politics and sociocultural trauma in France related to the Algerian War. Some knowledge of these circumstances is essential in understanding and appreciating aspects of Le Petit Soldat.

Check out Richard Brody’s essential biography, Everything Is Cinema: The Working Life Of Jean-Luc Godard, which covers some of the background on the making of and subsequent political and cultural controversies surrounding the film.

Quick Google search brought these pieces up:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...425-story.html

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/ri...-torture-scene

https://www.indiewire.com/2013/04/re...railer-198242/

I’m sure there’s more academic writing on the contexts of the film that you could find with a bit more digging.
