Quite an interesting turn of events. For a film like this to get a second chance is almost unprecedented. Personally, I was extremely disappointed when this movie was released. It had so much promise and the end result was a watered down mess. To hear about how the movie was nowhere near what the director intended (after a disastrous test screening the studio got cold feet about having a movie centered around Ryan Phillipe's "bisexual antihero" character and so they did away with any gay content regarding Phillipe's Shane character and shoehorned him into a forced romance with the Neve Campbell character to capitalize on the young actors' growing popularity at the time). They did away with a half hour of footage and reshot an alternate forty minutes, shifting plots and dramatic character arcs in the process. This was supposed to be the next Boogie Nights and ended up an instantly forgettable film that was skewered by critics and audiences alike. And in the end the movie bombed anyway. For years the director has been fighting to get his preferred cut financed and off the ground, and over time he has painstakingly assembled the movie he originally wanted everyone to see, a completely different film which is now being labeled as a a new "gay classic." I don't know how true the hype is, but it for sure is better than studio cut. So now that it's making the festival rounds (it just premiered at the Berlin Film Festival which is a big deal) and has a planned digital release, there is new hope that this ideal cut of '54' will hopefully make it's way to Blu-ray! Fingers crossed! Last edited by rooboy78; 02-20-2015 at 12:14 AM. |
