Movies and television are almost entirely works of fiction designed to entertain you. It shouldn't be surprising if some of the stuff you see like the robotic hand in that car were really just things done for the camera in order to wow you.

The title of this thread should be: "Some of the backstories on Pimp My Ride were embellished to add drama and some of the modifications were removed post-filming for safety reasons." The linked article is more of a "behind the scenes" and actually quite interesting if you enjoyed watching the show.
