I have the stunning German Digi Book of "M" but I am a little confused. Going off Caps A Holic and comparing the Criterion, Eureka & Universum the latter appears slightly cropped. I know this is a completely new transfer but can anyone tell me why this is?

Because a full negative is hardly ever supposed to be shown projected anyway. There's cropping on just about every film. So either this one is slightly cropped in because it's actually correct (and the previous versions showed too much) or because it's slightly wrong (but the cropping is so minimal is doesn't affect composition or the viewing experience.)
That's the problem with "screen cap science." You'd never notice it without side by side comparisons. and it's a non-issue in this case. If you look at every cap, not all of them are cropped in the same amount. Some are just slightly zoomed, while others are more aggressive around all edges. So it was done intentionally scene by scene. In fact, the first cap isn't cropped at all. |
