Default "M" Friz Lang Blu Ray

I have the stunning German Digi Book of "M" but I am a little confused. Going off Caps A Holic and comparing the Criterion, Eureka & Universum the latter appears slightly cropped. I know this is a completely new transfer but can anyone tell me why this is?

Probably best to move this into the Eureka thread for an answer...

Because a full negative is hardly ever supposed to be shown projected anyway. There's cropping on just about every film. So either this one is slightly cropped in because it's actually correct (and the previous versions showed too much) or because it's slightly wrong (but the cropping is so minimal is doesn't affect composition or the viewing experience.)

That's the problem with "screen cap science." You'd never notice it without side by side comparisons. and it's a non-issue in this case. If you look at every cap, not all of them are cropped in the same amount. Some are just slightly zoomed, while others are more aggressive around all edges. So it was done intentionally scene by scene. In fact, the first cap isn't cropped at all.

The German Disc is based on the same transfer as the Criterion and MoC discs. I think they found a few new scenes (seconds) and inserted them in the existing master. The main advantage of the German Disc is the great improvement of the image steadiness. To accomplish that you have to adjust the position for the frames which are too high or too low. But the master has only the visible image and no extra information outside (the frame can't be opened up further). So if you move the frames up or down you have to fill up the screen with small black bars. So in the end you would have black bars which change their size all the time. To avoid that, the picture is slightly zoomed in so the black bars disappear.

Read the interview for some more info on how it was created. Some great insight from Torsten Kaiser in it

Looks like it has a better encode also.
