Talking 3D fans 2D movie discussion thread

Quote:
The point of this thread is to talk about 2D movies from the perspective of 3D enthusiasts. Clearly, we all watch 2D movies -- we have no choice. We could discuss our thoughts and opinions in other dedicated 2D threads, but our group seems to "see things" a little different compared to non-3D movie watchers.
==========================================

Interstellar: excellent 2D movie. I watched it last night and was glued to the screen from beginning to end. Chris Nolan's story is amazing, the acting is primo, visual effects are out of this world. I enjoyed the shifting IMAX aspect ratio.

Throughout the movie I kept thinking to myself: what a phenomenal 3D presentation Interstellar would have been. Of all of the recent 2D movies I've viewed, this one SCREAMS for the 3D treatment. Even in 2D, it's a mesmerizing experience.

If you haven't done so yet, read Martin Liebman's shining review here.... or just skip the review and watch Intersteller ASAP.

Confession: I picked up the Target steel book and I ordered the exclusive Walmart NeoPak online (which will probably arrive completely crushed when it comes in the mail - LOL!).

I think pretty much every space movie would benefit from a top-notch 3D conversion.

I wonder if it's possible a 3D version (conversion) will be available to import??

3D in space can be tough to pull off because of all the darkness with light stars in the background, causing a good deal of "ghosting" for strong 3D shots where the foreground, mid and background objects have to battle out which gets the post 3D editing focus. If the foreground is kept inside the screen (mostly to avoid clipping at the edges of objects in front), then the mid or background elements separate more as a result, so it's a challenge to avoid seeing 1 star instead of 3 (the merged 3D star, and then the ghosted left and right star on either side of a strong 3D image).

But that's getting technical, and I agree it would have got me into the theater to see this if it was in strong 3D. I saw Gravity in 3D and probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise, even though I'm a fan of outer space documentaries.

Nolan doesn't like 3D and wouldn't tolerate a conversion. Not legally, anyway, and an amateur bootleg job from South East Asia isn't what you had in mind, I think.

I really did not enjoy Interstellar. I find Nolan films to be mostly very unengaging, and this one was no different. It was far better than Inception though which i completely loathed. I just don't think Nolan has an interesting visual style either, everything looks very uninspired.

I agree the guy is severely overrated. IMO his best film is still Memento.

It isn't that he doesn't like 3d, it's that he doesn't think film makers know how to use it with with exceptions. Great Gatsby for example he liked the 3d in. However he also seems to feel 35mm prints look better then 2k di's sent out to cinemas. I and last I checked most cinematographers disagree.

Also this thread really shouldn't exist. No 3d blu-ray is being discussed.

I haven't watched Gravity in a while and the last time I (obviously) viewed the 3D edition. I've been working like a lunatic on my computer the past few weeks and my eyes are strained. I decided to watch Gravity last night -- in 2D Yes, 2D. The 2D BD is from the 3D combo pack. The original 3D/2D release offers a 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio track.

Just this week, Warner Bros. re-released Gravity (in 2D only) in a new Diamond Luxe special edition (it's a NeoPack, like the new Wlamart-exclusive packaging for Interstellar). This release features Gravity with an Atmos audio track (core Dolby TrueHD 7.1). It also contains a version of Gravity called "Silent Space" that completely showcases the movie without any motion picture score music. Needless to say, I have it on order from amazon (it should arrive tomorrow).

Watching Gravity in 2D was still quite good. For story alone, Gravity in 2D is enthralling. But (as we all know) the 3D impact takes the movie to a totally different level that the 2D version cannot deliver. I will re-watch it again when I receive new Diamond Deluxe edition (2D only) to experience the new 7.1 audio mix. It's shameful that Warner Bros. did not include a 3D upgrade with the new audio codecs.

It boggles the mind why they would not issue the re-release in 3D. I'd very much like to see the silent space version but refuse to buy the 2D blu.
