Quote:
In Mussolini's Italy, repressed Jean-Louis Trintignant, trying to purge memories of a youthful, homosexual episode – and murder – joins the Fascists in a desperate attempt to fit in. As the reluctant Judas motors to his personal Gethsemane (the assassination of his leftist mentor), he flashes back to a dance party for the blind; an insane asylum in a stadium; and wife Stefania Sandrelli and lover Dominique Sanda dancing the tango in a working class hall. But those are only a few of this political thriller's anthology pieces, others including Trintignant's honeymoon coupling with Sandrelli in a train compartment as the sun sets outside their window; a bimbo lolling on the desk of a fascist functionary, glimpsed in the recesses of his cavernous office; a murder victim's hands leaving bloody streaks on a limousine parked in a wintry forest. Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece, adapted from the Alberto Moravia novel, boasts an authentic Art Deco look created by production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, a score by the great Georges Delerue and breathtaking color cinematography by Vittorio Storaro.

Ah, I thought a title this big would've gotten the 4K UHD treatment since it got one overseas in a few countries.

Also, is there any reason why they'd include the old restoration as well? Is there something controversial about the new one that they felt they needed to include the old one (á la Powerhouse Dragonwyck)?

I watched this 20 years ago and remember not liking it, but my sensibilities have changed a lot since then, so I've been waiting for this release to give it another shot.

I seem to recall reading that some were displeased with the new color grading of the restoration, so I suppose Kino/Raro wanted to give viewers both options. I too thought this might have gotten a 4K release as well (unless it will, and Kino just hasn't announced it yet).

I hear this so often that I’m beginning to think those sales are primarily an excuse to purge old stock in anticipation of another edition

I have more than a few from those sales. I’m just saving up cereal-box tops so that I can mail them in with the older discs to get some free upgrades.

I’ve got the Italian 4K (it doesn’t have HDR) and I’m more than happy with that, especially since it’s got good English subtitles. The color grading complaints never made sense to me. It looks gorgeous and was not what I was expecting based on those complaints. It’s a significant step up over the old Raro disc. And people should be happy with this.

Very strange they’re not giving this a UHD release.

Kino thought Cowboys & Aliens was somehow worthy of an actual 4K release but THIS wasn’t??? Come on.

missed opportunity, should've released it in 4K. hopefully the UK has a label that will release a 4K disc.

Jeez, I'll just go ahead and snag the actual 4K disc from Italy if this is only going to be a 1080p version of the new restoration + the same old disc. Why pay for inferior goods?

Is everyone buying the Italian 4k disc from Amazon Italy? Can't seem to find it from any US video stores.

Mine hasn’t shipped either. Received a mid-to-late December update from Amazon last night. Still debating on canceling for the Italian 4K edition. Maybe some reviews will surface soon.

I'd suggest the fact that they're packaging this new release with the old disc the way they are is a clue as to why this isn't getting a UHD release.

Why can't Raro lose the rights to this?

Beware that the 4K disc is region B locked.

Exactly. I'm guessing nobody else can get access to the OCN, and the bigger boutique labels aren't interested in this particular restoration. So I like that this release has good special features and two transfers. I think this is reasonable and I want this film in my collection.

Mediocre labels holding great films hostage … I want a 4K badly but I refuse to buy any more Raro blus, got burned years ago on their trash.
