Canada Dimensional Excursions: A Century of Innovation in 3D Cinema Toronto Nov 30 - Jan 01

Wasn’t sure where to post this, but I figured that some members here would be interested in hearing about an upcoming 3D series taking place at the TIFF Cinematheque in Toronto from November 30 to January 1. All films—some of which have never been released on 3D Blu-ray—will be presented in their original 3D formats. (Full disclosure, I curated the series, but don’t personally benefit from its success besides perhaps being asked to do it again.)

Artist and filmmaker Blake Williams has curated Dimensional Excursions: A Century of Innovation in 3D Cinema, a programme celebrating 3D’s primal and immersive energy, showcasing films made by artists and filmmakers — from the avant-garde and major studios both — that take playful and innovative approaches to the third dimension. Consisting of features and shorts, the programme includes rare gems like Jean-Luc Godard’s first and only 3D feature, Adieu au langage; Julian Roffman’s 1961 cult classic The Mask, the first feature-length 3D film made in Canada; and Martin Scorsese’s magical 3D feature, Hugo (2011), which, in addition to paying stereo-homage to many other early cinema treasures, includes its own bombastic rendition of the famed Lumières’ actualités.
Full program:

Nov. 30 (w/encore on Dec. 25)
Hugo (2011, Martin Scorsese)
- preceded by L’Arrivée d’un train 3D (1934, Louis Lumière)

Dec. 4
3D Shorts: Planes, Frames, and Autostereoscopy
- Dimensional Excursions (2024, Peter Rose, 14.5min,) Dolby 3D

- Let Your Light Shine (2013, Jodie Mack, 3min.) Diffraction 3D

Dec. 7

Fantastic lineup, wish I could attend! Nice curating! By the by, I think your PROTOTYPE is pretty brilliant, so glad to have it on 3-D Blu!

As for where to post this, I would think the “3D News And General Discussion” section would be a good fit.

Would that I were in Toronto, I’d attend all of these screenings in a heartbeat. Jackass 3D remains my most sorely missed 3D Blu-ray. And somehow I was today years old when I learned L’Arrivée d’un train was shot in 3D.

Flesh for Frankenstein is being shown on a glasses-free screen? That sounds awesome. Or is it just the preceding short shot in some sort of alternative method?

How is glasses free? Like a giant 3DS screen?

I wish Toronto was at least 3,000 km closer

Just the short is glasses-free. I wish we had an autostereoscopic screen!

The glasses-free films basically flicker between left and right imagery at a speed that allows the brain to perceive depth. You can see an example of Ken Jacobs’s Eternalism method here.
