‘Breaking Bad’ Star Bryan Cranston to Play Blacklisted Writer in ‘Trumbo’

Bryan Cranston is set to star in the indie “Trumbo,” based on the true-life story of blacklisted scribe Dalton Trumbo.

Jay Roach is directing the drama, with Michael London producing through his Groundswell Prods. banner along with Janice Williams, Kevin Brown and John McNamara, who also penned the script.

Pic follows Trumbo, who was sent to prison in 1950 for refusing to answer the questions of the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee. At the time he was the highest-paid writer in Hollywood.

Besides “Breaking Bad,” the UTA-repped Cranston can be seen in Legendary’s “Godzilla,” which bows next May. He is currently starring in the play “All the Way” at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass.

Little-known fact (probably useless trivia but it's interesting to me): Trumbo's daughter dated Steve Martin back when he was beginning his stand-up career. Some of Martin's earliest headshots were taken by her.

Anyway, Cranston should pull this role off. With a pair of glasses and a shaved head, he looks like Trumbo. But will audiences want to watch a film where the main character spends half the film in a bathtub?

People might confuse him with Walter White if he looks like that! If people will watch a movie about Howard Hughes where he spends half the movie locked in a room and urinating into mason jars, this should be watchable too.

If you've seen his work with HBO, you will see that Roach is more than the director of the Austin Powers trilogy and the first two Meet the Parents movies.

Bryan Cranston is bringing a shameful nexus of entertainment and politics to life once again in the movie Trumbo.

Following the conclusion of Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has been seen in Godzilla, and his biggest achievement has probably been a portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson in the play All the Way. That led to an HBO movie version of the play in which Cranston again plays the title role. But that’s not his only stint playing a significant figure from 20th Century American history. Cranston has also starred in Trumbo, a biopic about blackslited novelist and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Below, check out the first picture of Cranston in the film.

Jay Roach, who has his own career making films for HBO, directed the film, which “tells the story of the writer’s stand against the communist witch-hunt at the height of the cold war, his professional exile, which included an 11-month stint in prison for contempt of Congress, and his battle with powerful red-hating gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren).”

Dalton Trumbo was an accomplished novelist (his anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun is probably still his most famous book) and screenwriter who had been a member of the US Communist party during WWII. At that point, Communism wasn’t a big deal because we were friends with the Soviets. And people did what young people do: experimented with affiliations as we entered a new phase of our national culture.

But when anti-Communist fervor ignited in the late ’40s, Dalton Trumbo was one of a number of Hollywood figures called to testify in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Great pressure was exerted on those brought before HUAC to name other Communists and sympathizers. Turbo refused, and he was jailed and also blacklisted from working in Hollywood. He wrote a couple scripts under pseudonyms, and Kirk Douglas helped break the blacklist in 1960 when he championed Trumbo as author of Spartacus.

So Trumbo covers that particularly tumultuous period in the author’s life, which also happens to be a uniquely shameful period in American History.

In addition to Cranston, Trumbo features Diane Lane as Trumbo’s wife, Cleo; Elle Fanning as their daughter Nikola, and John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., and Alan Tudyk.

Trumbo shot in New Orleans, where it just wrapped. We should see it in 2015.

Why It Might Succeed:

If the last few years have taught us anything about the academy it is this – they love movies about show business. Three of the last four films to win Best Picture, “The Artist,” “Argo” and “Birdman,” have all had Hollywood or show business as a part of their story. One film that could benefit from that love this year is “Trumbo.”

Telling the story of Dalton Trumbo, the film will focus on one of Hollywood’s most successful screenwriters set against one of its darkest times. Trumbo was a member of the Hollywood Ten, a group filmmakers who refused to testify to the House of Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s on whether they had any communist affiliation. As a result, Trumbo was blacklisted. After years of struggling, Trumbo would work his way back into the industry under a pseudonym, writing two Oscar-winning screenplays, “The Brave One” and “Roman Holiday,” under his fake name.

It certainly is rich material for a film, and for Bryan Cranston, who will play Trumbo. Backing Cranston up is a solid supporting cast that includes John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Diane Lane, Elle Fanning, Louis C.K. and Alan Tudyk. Behind the camera sits Jay Roach, who has handled rich political dramas “Game Change” and “Recount” for HBO in the past, so we know that he can handle the subject.

I’d expect to see this film appear at one of the fall fests, potentially creating a solid level of buzz.

Why It Might Fail:

The question marks on “Trumbo” rely in its two main figures behind the camera, Roach and screenwriter John McNamara. Roach’s feature films aren’t exactly a vote of confidence. Among Roach’s credits are the “Austin Powers” trilogy, “Meet the Parents” and “Meet the Fockers,” “The Campaign;” his most dramatic feature film prior to “Trumbo” was “Mystery, Alaska.” It’s not the most inspiring resume and it would leave many shaking their heads if all he had were those films. However, as mentioned above, he’s shown what he can do with rich dramas, so while it may be a concern, it’s a minor one.

McNamara is a much bigger question mark. With no features to his name prior to “Trumbo,” McNamara’s biggest credit to date is writing nine episodes for “Lois and Clark” in the 90s. It’s a little disappointing that the story of one of Hollywood’s most famous screenwriters couldn’t net a bigger name to pen it,

We also don’t know what kind of campaign the film will get. Bleecker Street Media is the distributor, but how big of a campaign can they mount? Will they bring in a co-distributor? When will they release the film? The answer to these questions will very much determine the awards fate of “Trumbo,” as Bleeck Street has not handled a major awards contender on its own before.

Awards Potential:

If I were a gambling man I’d say the odds of Bryan Cranston earning his first Oscar nomination after his career-defining performance in “Breaking Bad” has as good of odds as any actor this year. In fact, “Trumbo” could be a player for a number of actors to crack into the Oscar race. If nothing else this could be a strong actor’s film.

But, as mentioned above, this is a film about Hollywood and the Academy loves to honor itself, so if the film can live up to expectations it can be a player in the big races as well, even for McNamara. Maybe Dalton Trubmo can earn one more Oscar win.

Yes - it is a very VERY strong cast. Cranston is always great - as are Helen Mirren and Diane Lane
