Default It's Official: FOX Considering Firefly Reboot

Well, it's official, and this is no April Fools joke either. It's being reported that Fox Studios is considering a reboot of the Firely series but that they will only do a new series with Josh Whedon.

For fans who have been pestering Fox Studios and John Whedon about this, it could be great news but that it all depends on whether or not Whedon would agree to return to Fox Studios and either reboot the series or to continue where the series left off.

According to the article being reported on ComicBook.com:

Quote:
The folks at Fox often ask if they would ever be willing to make a reboot of Firefly, or at least revisit the original with some more episodes. With X-Files, Prison Break, and 24 all getting new shows, is it really out of the question?

According to Fox President Of Entertainment David Madden, the option for more Firefly is on the table. There's only one condition:

Joss Whedon has to be on board if it's going to get made.

It's because of Whedon that the show became the landmark that it was, and Fox doesn't want to get involved without him. They know it could be a hit, but they aren't willing to drop the show's identity.

Madden was sure enough about his decision to mention that he wouldn't even consider the possibility without Whedon's involvement.

This is awesome news!!!

Well everyone (who hasn't been killed off) is available now except Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin (who has one of the most underwritten and useless roles on Gotham, and that's saying something!) and Gina Torres (depending on what her role is on The Catch).

Well, I think the best thing they could do is a reboot. But, Whedon could just as easily retcon Wash's death. Since Ron White passed away some time ago, he could be a tougher choice. But, there could also be the choice to recast the characters with other actors and just continue where the first season left off.

But, I think the best chance would be just to reboot the series and recast. I would like to see the original cast return but since they've all mostly gone their separate way, I doubt they would return.

I always thought that if this didn't end up back on FOX that it could of been picked up by Netflix instead even if it was for another season or maybe more.

The firefly series would never be found on Netflix. What many fans don't realize is that Fox Studios owns the rights to the firefly TV series. The movie rights are something different. Netflix couldn't produce a firefly series because of this. Josh Whedon has said that one of the reasons why he didn't return to bring back the series in the past was because Fox owns the rights to the series, including home video and digital rights.

The studio execs know full well about the potential behind firefly, much in the same way as how they own the rights to the first Star Wars movie. The only way Netflix of Hulu could ever produce a new firefly series is if they licensed the rights from Fox. With new interested from David Madden, it looks like they could be talking to Josh Whedon about a possible reboot for the series.

Before anyone asks, it's true that SyFy broadcasted the series on their network but that SyFy had acquired some limited rebroadcast rights to the original series.

Joss Whedon is not going to go back to this unless it is a continuation from Serenity with the original cast. Never going to happen so I won't be getting my hopes up in the least.

I'd watch a continuation... but a reboot is a bad idea, as bad as unkilling characters.

Tell me about it. While there were earlier attempts to bring firefly back, Josh Whedon has expressed some ambivalence about returning to a firefly reboot or continuation. I think that the series wouldn't work without Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Stait and Adam Baldwin. Those four (sans Ron White) were the core of the series. I would love to see the original cast return but that Josh Whedon is a major question mark. It's doubtful he would agree to return to reboot or continue firefly. The smart thing would be to continue where the events left off from the first season.

However, I think a soft reboot could also work. Continuing the series from where the Serenity movie left off but retconning Wash's death.

Why do you keep bringing up retconning Wash's death? That would be a soap opera thing to do.

They canceled the excellent Almost Human and replaced it with the lesser Minority Report. That didn't work so they are looking for something.

I brought it up because the subject is heavily debated among the firefly community, even after the movie was first released. It's one of the most contentious aspects of firefly that a lot of fans still debate, not just here on these forums. I've actually talked to some of them and there is a lot of concern over whether Whedon did that just to shock the audience because the character's death made absolutely no sense to the storyline of the Serenity movie.

I know there was a push, some years ago, to retcon the events of the movie, in the event that the firefly series was ever restarted from where the first season left off.

No original cast = no dice

Fox doesn't deserve a shot at redemption with the way they treated Firefly.

I have to admit, Fox really doesn't deserve another chance. Even though they have expressed a desire to dig back into the series, the likelihood of Josh Whedon returning to bring back firefly is practically a non-starter. While I appreciate Fox's desire to bring this series back, there are serious doubts as to whether they could get either Josh Whedon or the original cast to return.

Personally, I doubt that Fox will be able to convince Whedon to return. I remember, in the years after the series was first released to DVD and even after the Serenity movie was released, that Whedon kept telling fans through his website, Whedonesque, that he had no desire to return to the series.

The original cast is even more doubtful since the majority of them have moved on to other projects. Morena Baccarin is still attached to Gotham, Gina Torres has recently finished a stint on Suits, Alan Tudyk is attached to Powerless, Adam Baldwin is attached to The Last Ship and Jewel Stait continues to appear in a variety of motion pictures. The original cast is simply spread out all over the map.

But, according to Madden, it all depends on Whedon.

I would have been all for this about ten years ago, as Firefly is the only Joss Whedon project I ever liked, but nowadays I'm like "Eh." (Kinda like with the X-Files revival.) While I still enjoy watching Serenity every now and then, I feel like too much time has passed for me to really care about Firefly in a big way anymore.

Tell me about it. I just don't like these networks who do these television series continuation projects. X-Files and Gilmore girls are two excellent examples as to why television networks need to stop doing these revitalization projects. Even The CW is learning this lesson, with the Charmed reboot having been pushed back once again.

Once a television series is ended, it should remain there. A-Team, Bewitched, Murder She Wrote ... these are all reboots that have ended up being canceled before they even entered production. It's also why I'm dreading that Magnum P.i. reboot series.

That's just what Whedon does, his projects end so he kills people off.
[Show spoiler]Anya and Spike
on Buffy,
[Show spoiler]Paul and Topher
on Dollhouse, Wash on Firefly/Serenity. Hell, multiple Angels characters died throughout the run and
[Show spoiler]Wesley
dies in the finale.

Wasn't Charmed a complete reboot, or am I just confusing it with the other Charmed project? I think I read there was one that was a continuation and one that was a reboot.

It's Joss, not Josh. And, it's Ron Glass, not Ron White.

I don't mean to be snide, but I figure I try to help out in anyway that I can. I apologize if I come across as snide. Again, it's 100% unintentional.

Slip of the tongue on my part. HEH. But, in any event, while I'd love to see this series return, Whedon has expressed a disinterest in Fox. I remember when firefly originally broadcasted on Fox and it had a sporadic broadcast history, aired out of order and that I thought the Western theme for the series was odd for a science fiction series.
