Default Video=HDMI Audio=AV Multi ?

There wouldn't be a problem with that would there? Old Pioneer Pro-Logic AVR with PS3.

I don't have HDMI capable display but I do know that HDMI is for both picture and audio so when you go to Settings --> Display settings make sure you choose HDMI and set the resolution for your Display and then it will ask you for audio settings and choose HDMI again, not AV MUTI

I'm leaning towards a PS3 for my parents Christmas present and I just don't have any experience with that AV-Multi thing. My set-up has always been HDMI to display and toslink to my Sony AVR for audio.

yes you can send the video via HDMI and then output the audio with either toslink or rca analog. The PS3 can do most anything.

Even an old Piooneer receiver with a Pro-Logic decoding would have CD inputs. Use the CD input as your digital input device. If the receiver only have coaxial digital in instead of optical, get a converter box.
