Default Have you bought a movie and right away a newer edition is released?

It used to happen a lot with dvds and in some cases with blu rays. I buy a movie and before I even watch it, I find out that a collector's edition with extras and better transfer is being released. Has this happened to anyone else? please include examples. My latest example is independence day.

No, because I watch the release news and know what's coming in the future and being remastered/restored.

Bates Motel, I do that very often but back in the days when I didn't follow release news it happened a lot.

No. I'm good at doing my research before I buy something. Newer editions of films/shows always get announce months in advance. I also hold back to hopefully have a newer edition announced like I did with Pan's Labyrinth. I held back on that film hoping Criterion releases it and boom, it has been announced that Criterion will be adding it to their collection.

Not to be a dick, but that's pretty shitty reasoning. For starters, if everyone did that there wouldn't ever be a second release to begin with as the first would sell so poorly they'd never bother with a new edition. More than that though if you enjoy a film why would you intentionally not buy it for years upon years in the hope that maybe one day a better version would come along? You realize that Pan's Labyrinth was released almost 9 years ago? Do you realize how much enjoyment I got out of watching the existing disc that... Boom... you didn't get by choosing to not purchase it. On top of that, Criterion hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire in recent years with some of their transfers and or decisions as to how films look.

I understand why people tend to get excited when Criterion announces a new film, but few things make me laugh harder than when someone "held Back" from owning a film for nearly a decade only to find out that the new edition is somehow inferior to what came before.

As for the topic at hand, it happens to everyone from time to time. Just because something new is announced doesn't always mean it's better. Sometime getting an older release for $5 is more attractive than waiting to see how the new $25 release ends up. Value and Price are often not one in the same. Despite having more features, better picture/sound, or some other selling point, a $40 new release doesn't always provide the same value as an older $5 version.

I bought the German releases of both Tootsie and Gilda just before Criterion announced they were releasing them. I flipped the Tootsie release for the Criterion but kept the Gilda.

Cool. It only took you 9 short years of waiting for that one.

I wouldn't say new editions have come out right after I've bought movies too often. Sometimes, yes. A lot of times, my timing is right. But when it's not, I don't always mind double dipping.

Well, I bought the U. K. Masters of Cinema DVD edition of "Funeral Parade of Roses" in May only to recently learn that Cinelicious Pics will release the film on Blu-ray. So, yeah it has happened to me.

I agree. I can maybe hold out for a few months if I find out in advance that a way better edition will be released. Otherwise I'll pick up whatever release is available for my enjoyment of the movie.

Not 9, 2 since I started my Blu-Ray collection and 1 since I started buying Criterion. The company had released a lot of Del Toro's horror works so I had a feeling they were going to release his best one at some point.

Too many times I will buy a blu-ray and a couple months later Criterion will release a new version.

It's happened to me a few times.

Example #1: I bought the 2008 Blu-ray of John Carpenters The Thing shortly before the Shout Factory edition was announced.

Example #2: I had just finished buying the Disney editions of the following Studio Ghibli films last year. (Mostly from the DMC)

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Pom Poko
Whisper of the Heart
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Cat Returns
Howl's Moving Castle
Tales from Earthsea
Ponyo
The Secret World of Arrietty

Then about two weeks after I bought the last one on the list, GKIDS announced that they were releasing new editions of all of them.

A week after getting A Fish Called Wanda, Arrow announced their remastered version with original mono. Only just upgraded a year later when the price was low

Lots of times. I don't remember specific cases, fortunately. It never fails to piss me off.

A few times. Since I started coming here it's easier to get a heads up about special editions that I might want.

A few times. The most recent was with Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. Finally decided to throw down on the 88 Films version and before it even arrived I found out that Severin is putting out a version later this year.

I’ve been pretty lucky with that. Today I ordered Shouts “The Larry Sanders Show” so I expect a bluray announcement anytime now.
