It used to happen a lot with dvds and in some cases with blu rays. I buy a movie and before I even watch it, I find out that a collector's edition with extras and better transfer is being released. Has this happened to anyone else? please include examples. My latest example is independence day.

No. I'm good at doing my research before I buy something. Newer editions of films/shows always get announce months in advance. I also hold back to hopefully have a newer edition announced like I did with Pan's Labyrinth. I held back on that film hoping Criterion releases it and boom, it has been announced that Criterion will be adding it to their collection.

I understand why people tend to get excited when Criterion announces a new film, but few things make me laugh harder than when someone "held Back" from owning a film for nearly a decade only to find out that the new edition is somehow inferior to what came before. As for the topic at hand, it happens to everyone from time to time. Just because something new is announced doesn't always mean it's better. Sometime getting an older release for $5 is more attractive than waiting to see how the new $25 release ends up. Value and Price are often not one in the same. Despite having more features, better picture/sound, or some other selling point, a $40 new release doesn't always provide the same value as an older $5 version. |

![]() I wouldn't say new editions have come out right after I've bought movies too often. Sometimes, yes. A lot of times, my timing is right. But when it's not, I don't always mind double dipping. |

I agree. I can maybe hold out for a few months if I find out in advance that a way better edition will be released. Otherwise I'll pick up whatever release is available for my enjoyment of the movie.

Not 9, 2 since I started my Blu-Ray collection and 1 since I started buying Criterion. The company had released a lot of Del Toro's horror works so I had a feeling they were going to release his best one at some point.

It's happened to me a few times.
Example #1: I bought the 2008 Blu-ray of John Carpenters The Thing shortly before the Shout Factory edition was announced. Example #2: I had just finished buying the Disney editions of the following Studio Ghibli films last year. (Mostly from the DMC) Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Castle in the Sky My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service Porco Rosso Pom Poko Whisper of the Heart Princess Mononoke Spirited Away The Cat Returns Howl's Moving Castle Tales from Earthsea Ponyo The Secret World of Arrietty Then about two weeks after I bought the last one on the list, GKIDS announced that they were releasing new editions of all of them.
