Japan Kirby: Right Back at Ya (星のカービィ)

The official Kirby Twitter has announced the complete series of Kirby Right Back at Ya on Blu-Ray. This release will be the Japanese release with its original language, and it is a brand new scan in 1080p HD. The aspect ratio appears to be 1.33:1. It doesn't appear the English dub will be included due to the 4Kids release having edited scenes, so an English distributor would have to make a separate release.

Not very familiar with this series but I don't think it's a new scan. The tweet in Japanese says "HD remaster" which is often marketspeak for upscale, which would make sense since it's a series from the early 2000's and was probably digital SD originally. Don't see any production cels or anything when I did a quick Google search.

Still, it's good that this finally will have a full release, I believe it was only partially released on VHS in Japan before. I previously assumed that Nintendo wanted it buried like the Mario anime. Hopefully nothing is censored.

I'd love to see a US release with Japanese audio and subbed. Maybe in Discotek's wheelhouse?

With this being an "HD remaster", there is a chance that they re-rendered the CGI elements in 1080p. But the 2D elements would still have to be upscaled.

This show was 100% digital (digipaint with lots of CGI), so I don't think there can be a "new scan." It's most likely an upscale.

I really don't see GKIDS getting this. The only anime TV shows they've gotten are very acclaimed ones from high profile directors like Evangelion, Nadia, and Future Boy Conan. This seems like something only Discotek would be interested in at this point.

The Kirby anime was super popular in Japan in its heyday...

DiscoTek has released Sonic X and Dinosaur King on SD Blu-Ray formats. It's definitely possible they could ask Nintendo to use clips of the JP Blu-Ray edited together with the English dub on top instead of using a tape owned by 4Kids. I hope that if Kirby sells well, it tells TMS to release Sonic X's Japanese release on Blu-Ray, especially with the uncensored scenes.

Doubt it. They used 4Kids' masters for Shaman King's dub, but an AstroRes upscale for the uncut Japanese version. Keep in mind that 4Kids did much more than just cut scenes. They also made many visual alterations through digital ink and paint (and even light CGI) that wouldn't match the Japanese video at all.

Why did discotek not "Astro res" the 4kids shaman king release? Is it something they don't own or would it make the 4kids digital paint pop out more?

It was digitally composited, so they could do a 1080p recomp like Gurren Lagann provided the original animation still exists but that process is costly and I'd be surprised if they did it.

The dubbed Shaman King came from its own set of masters whereas the Japanese release came from the original TV masters. The latter probably upscaled better, coupled with the fact the original uncut show they deemed more worthy of the upscale treatment.

A fuller look of the original Kirby anime background art.

According to the seller (named blacked out for privacy), Warpstar, Inc. left behind almost no traces of the anime's production work because they produced all the animation digitally, but hand-painted the backgrounds.

Probably an upscale since most anime of this period was animated digipaint and finished on 480i digibeta.

I'm surprised 4kids didn't mistranslate her name as Princess Lona back then...

I'm not sure about the details, so I might be wrong. Pre-order started and already ended in a few hours? Apparently exclusive to one website (at least for now?). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

https://www.kirby.jp/goods/

https://www.valuemall.jp/SHOP/KBXI-00015-24.html

Has cool extras, such as a pilot, textless openings and endings, and the American version of episode 1, etc.

It seems like they're working on making a second printing, which I hope I can get in on before that too sells out.
