It was a firmware upgrade thing --- he did his fw upgrade via a USB stick and fixed it. If people don't like FW upgrades, owning the HD-A1 players would be a journey through dante's inferno. (Not that the PS3's fw upgrade is smooth sailing, but at least the PS3 screens are readable and not some linux console).

HDDsize has next to nothing to do with disc playback. Probably let the kid handle the disc and had a lot of smudges on it.

Gah, I hope it doesn't come out that way, I hope to have a collection of filsm, instead of files that can disappear with a HD malfunction...

Imho Digital DL and Physical media will continue to co-exist. One will be more fit for portable players (eventually all phones will be used that way), the other for high quality formats.
On top of that, I still have to see a Downloaded file with a collector photo Art booklet downloaded along

Enjoying it more each and every day.

In fact, I just picked up my own film, CIGARETTE BURNS, and plan to try that out later tonight. I'm excited to have a Blu-Ray version of it. I was never happy with the home video transfer.

Good stuff, and hopefully you guys can help steer me right as I continue to delve deeper into Blu-Ray in the months to come.

I like the idea that Fox is trying on the standard-def LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD release, where there is a digital copy of the film on the DVD that you can use in iPods or whatever. If the studios would do that... include a digital version for your use along with the physical media version... I think that offers up an interesting set of possibilities.

MoriartyAICN, as in Moriarty from Ain't It Cool website? Cool, I enjoy your reviews. You and Quint are two of my favourite contributers at that website.

Anyway, if you're looking for some recommendations. I would recommend "2001: A Space Odyssey". This movie has never looked this good. I was pleasantly surprised with "One Last Thing...". It looks quite good on Blu-ray. I also would recommend "Black Book", it's quite beautiful on BD. The story itself may strike a sour note with some people because of how they portrayed some of the Jewish people in a particular scene, which was highly disturbing.

"Cigarette Burns" looks good on BD. Better than I expected knowing how Anchor Bay can be either a hit or miss. You must check out "Halloween" on BD.

Yes, another one of those (censored!) regulated WMV "Plays For Sure" formats, that keeps attracting studios that don't want to play with Steve Jobs.

Still, it's a good concept as soon as a studio does figure it out.

(And ftr, if you're on a Bluetooth or Apple Airport wireless Internet, your PS3 won't even need a separate thumb-drive download to cart-over those firmware updates--Just hook in, go to the Settings menu and grab it off the wi-fi.)

Please excuse the giggling over Harry's "love" of HDDVD, as some find it ironic that your column stumbled into Blu the same way--
Bought the first player he saw in a rush, discovered how cool it was because he'd never used it before, thought the format he bought had invented it all, and spouted the column of standard line...In your case, however, it happened to be the right one.

I remember when I took the plunge on laserdisc. I was working at a video store in Tampa that was a chain created to fight Blockbuster for local dominance. Rent-A-Movie. It was all videotape... thousands of them... rental only. And while working, I would study our catalogs, and in particular, the laserdisc listings.

And the listings... oh, god, it was like porn. Title after title after title, and each one said that glorious word next to it... in parentheses, so you won't miss it... LETTERBOXED. And I started talking to my buddy about going halves on the $500 Panasonic (I think) that was for sale at one place in Tampa. When I took him over there and showed him the racks of movies (they had maybe 300 titles at the time), he was pretty shaken. Especially when we saw the demo. And then the clincher... he saw STAR WARS on the racks.

This was in 1990. So this was the first generation STAR WARS release. The grey 20th Century Fox logo. God, I loved the sleeves on those discs. That was the film that sold us the player. And once we started buying, we didn't stop. By the time we split up that collection, it was at something like 2800 titles.

But Blu-Ray or HD? Total noob.

And to be honest, I'll be picking up an HD player this weekend. So I'm going to compare the two of them here at the house.

I just want to check it out for myself now that I've taken the plunge, upgrading as I go. I'm just getting my feet wet.

If you have any questions, don't hestitate to ask us. Believe me, I was pretty new to Blu-ray Disc when I first got into it last December. I did some research and looked into both formats then one day I went into a Wal-Mart and saw the 60GB PS3 model sitting there on the shelf. That was when I knew Blu-ray Disc was the one to go with.

I just had to buy it.
