Excellent, finely-acted, sobering drama.

I can claim I'm happy with my DVD all I want, but I can easily imagine myself upgrading this one.

Hopefully without the huge green tramline scratch that lasts a couple of reels on their old DVD.

yeah, that was NASTY

the restoration debuted last year, so I'm speculating they fixed it:

Restored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation in collaboration with Janus Films and The Museum of Modern Art. Restoration funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation.

It's been like that forever, the old VHS put out by Janus had the same flaw. I saw a print a few years ago at Film Forum, before the restoration, and the one good thing that could be said about the print was that at least it didn't have that specific flaw.

Here's hoping Lucas's team fixed it!

This is such a unique film- interesting setting, well developed characters and great acting. I’m so excited as I didn’t think I’d see this anytime soon.

Very interesting! Not long before The Horses Mouth makes it way to BD, as it too has had a recent 4k restoration.

Note that it's already on the CriterionChannel, and the stream looks MUCH better than the DVD. Will be curious to compare the BD to the stream.

My copy from the flash sale was waiting for me when I got home today. I'm not going to have a chance to watch the whole thing right away, but I immediately checked for this, and I'm pretty sure they fixed it. I went to the third-to-last chapter, which is basically the washroom scene with a bit of lead-up, and watched for a few minutes. The scratch was 99.9% gone -- on a few pans, if you know right where to look, I think you can spot a momentary anomaly, but as long as you aren't consciously and actively looking for it, I don't think you'd spot it. Unless I'm misremembering, that scene previously had the scratch.

Thanks George Lucas!

Still waiting for that one. Has there been any takers?

Criterion/Janus own it outright and they were the ones who did the 4k resto that was to be screen right before COVID hit. We should hear an announcement anytime be it screenings or a Criterion release slate.

One of the biggest missed opportunities is good friends Guinness and Mills not switching their roles on the stage as they discussed; a separate movie with them swapping would have been absolutely titanic.
