We all have our favorite movies, favorite moments and all the varied experiences that go with it. But harken back to the days of "car mono" sound or was it "1.0", I'm not young enough to have been part of the Drive-In craze of it's day, but I do remember seeing two film as a kid with E.T. being the second next to the 1980 release of Smokey and the Bandit II. I know kind of an odd double-bill, but both are Universal Pictures. Any who imagine if the Drive-in was brought back with today's surround standards and would it be just as fun, but the main question is what was the BEST movie you ever watched at your local drive-in?
Remember mine where: Smokey and the Bandit II and E.T. ( great movie to watch on that pre-Imax screen ![]() |

There's still a drive-in here that's open during the summer. I haven't been to it in about ten years though. Last movies I remember seeing there were summer 2003 movies like 2 Fast 2 Furious and Freddy vs. Jason
Drive-ins aren't my thing. I prefer stadium seating, giant curved screen, etc. |

When I was a kid my parents took us to see Star Wars at least 5 times at a local drive in. They use to play what was referred to as B-Movies after some shows on a double bill. I saw Logan's Run at that theater for the first time. The last movie I saw there before it closed was Raider's of the Lost Ark. Good times, I remember the screen being astronomically huge.

All the drive-ins near me closed long ago.
One, which was open until 1995 or 1996, had two outdoor screens, and I remember seeing tons of movies there. They would have double features and show tons of trailers in between. We would back my open-top Jeep in and sit in the back and watch, or often times we actually set up in the next stall with lawn chairs and enjoy the outdoor movie. But that got closed down and in it's place is the main 16-screen multiplex in my town. The other drive-in is another story. I remember as a kid seeing a few films there with my family - Grease, a couple Disney classic re-releases, etc. But then somewhere in the early 80's they went a very different direction and started showing ADULT movies. Well actually just two - they had Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones double feature playing for a couple YEARS before they finally closed down. The funny part is, if you went to my elementary school playground at the top of the hill, you could see the top 2/3 of the screen over the trees ![]() It's still there, the sign rotting away with a "for sale" sign. But it's just the property. Somebody tried to buy it to reopen as a drive-in a few years ago, but nearby residents got that shot down. Jerks. Last edited by cinemaphile; 04-22-2013 at 08:04 PM. |

Planet of the Apes triple featuere back in the mid 70's. It was around Thanksgiving, and for a promotion they were throwing live turkeys off the roof of the snack bar, and I caught one. The goofy promotions they ran back then...
![]() Sigh. I do miss drive-ins though. There are none in my area any longer. |

The only movies I've seen at a drive-in are Gremlins and Ghostbusters, both great experiences. There's a drive in about 30 minutes from me, I keep meaning to go but never get around to it.
On a side note, I had a friend that lived near the drive-in where they filmed a shootout for Heat. That was pretty cool to watch |

In the late 90's, one of the last drive-inns in our area decided to show quad-features of 70's/80's grindhouse splatter flicks. I saw Faces of Death 1 & 4, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Hills Have Eyes pt 2 (we left 20 mins. in...dreadful movie).
My favorite childhood memory was seeing the trailer for Revenge of The Jedi. |

We have two in my town. The Springmill Drive In and the Sunset Drive In. Springmill was able to bounce back after a few years of crappy luck. I left in 2003 and when I came back in 2009, they built a second screen to get more people in.
Best experience would have to be on September 25, 2010. They had a film festival that consisted of five films on 35mm. In this order, Jaws, Tentacles, Burial Ground: Nights of Terror, Demons, and Laserblast. It was awesome to see Jaws on the big screen. The print was beat to hell and was faded redish-brown and was filled with those vertical lines throughout the movie. But, my God, to witness it on 35mm... The other movies were fun too. I'm happy that I have Burial Grounds and Demons, whenever I watch them, I think back to that day. |

Not sure what I was supposed to watch?
But the screen behind us played Halloween '78. I was just a kid at the time, I couldn't keep my eyes off, It was too scary to not look. (had to make sure dude wasn't kreepin' up on me). Can't forget a face like that, no matter the age. ![]() |
