Default Do you buy 3D Blu-ray's even though you do not have a 3Dtv?

I was wondering if some people buy the 3D version of blu rays even if they do not own a 3D tv? I do not own a 3D tv but always wanted one and sometimes I wonder if I should have bought some of my blu rays with the 3D version instead of the 2D ones I bought ( just in case I get a 3D tv someday). Since the 3D versions come with the 2D blu included you are not really losing out, only paying a bit more for that version but fool proofing yourself if down the road you buy a 3D tv. What seems to be a shame is that many of the newer 4k tv's do not come with 3D (though if I were to get a new tv someday would try to by a 1080p with 3D if they still make them). That would be an upgrade from my 720p tv. Before I got my blu ray player I bought one blu ray, the first seaon of VEEP because it also came with dvd's that I could watch until I made the decision to by a blu ray player. Feel like I missed out by not buying 3D copies of blu ray's just in case I do get a 3D tv someday.

I do this. Like you said it future proofs your collection and it only costs a little bit more. When the time comes and I actually get a 3D TV I'll be able to just hook it up and start watching, because I've already built up a collection of 3D movies.

No I don't buy 3D blu-rays because I don't have a 3D HDTV. I don't even like 3D because it's a gimmick.

Yes. I use the 3D discs as coasters.

I do now (I have a 3D setup), but I really wish I did the whole time, especially when it comes to the Disney stuff for both the 3D discs and the digital copies.

I buy marvel 3d titles because Disney decided they're the only version to get slipcovers.

Some thought them moving pictures were a gimmick, and then talkies came around - another gimmick. Blu-ray was a gimmick to get those that bought the movie on Laserdisc, tape or DVD to buy the same movie again. Next gimmick is 4K or UHD. Many have seen these as improvements to the viewing experience. I will go to see a movie that is showing in 3D before paying to see it in 2D. Just my preference.

Have a 3Dtv in the living room, have no intention of ever using it. My room BD player is 3D capable but my TV isn't. Bought that player only because it was on sale.

I only bought the following discs that came with the 3D because they were the only way to get the BD or the bonus disc/exclusive features/exclusive packaging. I move it to the back of the packaging:

(Ultron Steelbook)

Been meaning to get Prometheus but never got around to it.

All movies are "gimmicks". I frankly despise that argument. Films are illusions that mimic reality. How is that any less of a gimmick than 3D?

How about a musical score in a film. Is that a gimmick too?

I recommend buying as many 3D blus as you can afford because who knows how long the studios will support it?

Also, there is a BIG difference between 3D on a TV versus on a projector. No comparison.

I bought most of my movies as 3D combo packs before I had 3D capability at my place. I knew eventually I was going to get a projector that could do it and I'd be able to enjoy them then. I wish I started earlier than I did though since I then had to buy 3D sets of films I had already bought as 2D only. I find watching 3D at home much better than at theaters.

Very rarely. Unless there's some kind of incentive to get it (like Wolverine's extended cut or Prometheus' third disc of extras), I usually just go with the 2D version. The only exception in my collection is Gravity and the reason I have the 3D version is that I was so sick of missing it every time in theaters, that I just went kind of nuts bought the higher priced one out of frustration.

I agree 100%. Even if you are just thinking about buying a 3D TV or projector, I would buy the 3D version. I think they will become pretty rare in the next few years.

I've never understood why there is so much hate for something that is an option.

This reminds me of how I used to buy blurays even though I didn't have a bluray player yet..... I knew I'd get there in the end.

I bought a load when the local Sony store closed down for £1 each. They're all still sealed! I've never had much interest in it.

My next projector upgrade will be 3D so I've been buying 3D for awhile to get ready. While watching the 2D version that came with the set, I am looking forward to experiencing them in 3D.

I frequently (but not always) do. If there's a crazy sale on the 2D version, I'll opt for that instead, but otherwise, I try to forward-proof in case I ever do get a 3DTV.

If you are definitely going to buy 3D TV eventually, then I do recommend buying the 3D blu-rays, especially Disney/Marvel since those rarely goes on sale except the first week of release.

I started to collect 3D blu-rays even before having the 3D TV and glad I did. Now I have pretty big 3D collection and probably wouldn't be this much if I had to double dip on lot of the titles. For about $5 more than regular edition, it's really worth it.

Except for those that I watch in 3D IMAX, I actually prefer the 3D at home than in regular 3d theater screen. Many of films that I found 3D to be poor and too dark in theater was surprisingly much better at home. Really recommend it if you enjoy 3D.
