how many years do you think it will take for this show to be fully released on blu? ha I'm never going to have the time to watch 600 episodes. Shit that's more episodes than I've ever sat through for an entire show. Probably more than the simpsons.

it probably wont ever be fully released on blu ray, given that the Japanese have just announced the first blu ray of series episodes, starting at the most current "Punk Hazard" arc. and thats not out till after new years.

Never going to happen. The DVD's look great though and the best time to get started on them would be now since the collection sets came out last year.

I should have done my research before I bought the Japanese limited edition.....
I just watched this, and I must say it was pretty disappointed. I haven't watched the TV series or any of the movies in forever, though I still keep up with the manga, which I enjoy. I never expected too much from the story, despite the involvement of Oda himself. I figured it would be a standard feel-good shonen story. As expected, the story was nothing great, but it was serviceable. It's just fun to see these characters we love in a little adventure. I figured "serviceable" would be good enough if it had some great animation. However, I must say that the animation in this was a complete let down. I was perhaps expecting too much, since I already knew the animation for the show is pretty sub-par. (I get that it's not a seasonal show and runs year-round... So I can understand that that is a constraint in the show that can't be avoided to a certain extent.) However, in all honestly, a lot of seasonal TV productions have much better animation than this movie. I guess it was stupid of me to expect movie level quality animation from Toei Animation. I guess it would never happen, but it's too bad they can't outsource the animation to a different studio, like Madhouse or Production I.G., for example. I'm guessing Film Z is not much better? I bought the limited edition of that at the same time. Fortunately, that only cost me 2500yen or so. I definitely need to do my research next time! Sorry for the rant... |

This is a bit off topic, but I just watched the sixth One Piece movie for the first time, that being Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island directed by Mamoru Hosoda.
I guess I'll have to start by redacting a statement from my last post. This film proves that the animation quality has nothing to do with the studio itself, since the animation in this sixth movie was glorious--so dynamic and fluid, a wonder to behold. The difference in quality probably has much more to do with a lot of the directorial choices made, as well as the animation directors who were on board. While Strong World had some things going for it in terms of visuals, such as some great creature design (courtesy of Oda) and its eye-popping use of color, Omatsuri's visuals blows it out of the water in virtually every single respect. It truly embraces the medium of animation. And I actually think the looser drawing style and character designs (which have been characteristic of all of Hosoda's films thus far) work much better with Oda's characters than the designs typically used in the TV series and the recent films. The staging, framing, and cinematography were also wonderful--it truly felt like a "film," rather than a long episode of One Piece. Admittedly, I have not seen all of the OP films yet, but this is the most visually impressive I've seen by far. And not only are the visuals impressive, but this was also the most engaging and captivating OP movie I've seen in terms of storytelling as well (by a country mile). It does somewhat break away from what you'd expect from One Piece, or shonen, especially of the JUMP variety, in general. While it starts out lighter with fun and games, it grows darker and darker, at one point going into a moment of near-horror (these tonal transitions are handled very well, I might add--nothing feels forced or abrupt). Yet, the typical shonen arc of overcoming obstacles and beating the big bad is in tact; it does a great job to adhering to that arc, all the while going into something much more unique and engaging. It's true that there may be a couple of moments where the characters seemingly go out of character in terms of dialogue or actions. However, this was not enough so that it bothered me, even as a fan of the manga. That said, I could understand why some fans of the manga would find this movie difficult to accept as a One Piece movie. The recent movies involving Oda, or even the fourth film, Dead End Adventure, probably capture the true spirit of One Piece to a greater degree. Still, I think they played the theme of "Nakama" in this film with much greater depth and meaning than Strong World, which I felt was a weak re-hash of the Arlong Park and/or Enies Lobby arcs. The villain was also layered and interesting; you could perhaps even describe him as sympathetic. I must add that it had a great soundtrack as well, which was superbly timed with the on-screen visuals. I think the film could have used another 20-30 minutes to flesh-out some of the characters and the plot elements, but overall, I didn't feel there were too many pacing issues, and it works just fine as is. I think this is quite stronger than Hosoda's Summer Wars, perhaps on par with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (need to rewatch), and a notch below Wolf Children. I honestly don't know how well the film would work for non OP fans, but I think it should be required viewing for any fans of Hosoda. |

So I just watched Z today (finally). It took me a while since I was so disappointed with Strong World. And I must say, I was impressed! I feel like this was the movie that Strong World tried and failed at being. I'd still say Omatsuri is the "best film" out of the One Piece films that I have seen, in virtually all aspects. However, this is probably the "best One Piece film," if that makes sense.
Anyway, I feel that this film trumped Strong World in virtually every respect. My biggest disaapointment in SW was the animation, and that was MUCH better here, especially for the action scenes and other "money shots," which were not only impressively animated but also nicely choreographed. Some of the more subdued scenes were still a bit static and stilted, with some subpar-ish drawings, but there was much less of that than in SW. (Perhaps this had a bigger budget due to the success of that film, and it seems like this could have had a longer production period as well). Or maybe I just didn't notice because I was much more compelled by the story in this one. I feel the stakes were just as high (or perhaps they were higher in SW), so I think the difference comes down to the villain. Shiki in SW was boring. Conversely, Zed in Z is a rich character--he feels human, flawed, and he's even a bit sympathetic, even if you can't really root for him. And again, the battles and action were just pure fun, and I didn't really get that feeling with SW. I feel like this was basically the ultimate shonen film. So while it didn't necessarily do anything new or reinvent the genre or anything, it embraced everything about what makes shonen manga appealing and packaged into one big movie. It's been too long since I've seen any other One Piece (which I mostly wasn't too impressed with, besides Dead End Adventure, which I remember being fairly fun), but I'd rank them as so: Omatsuri - 4/5 Z - 3.5/5 Strong World - 1.5/5 One thing I must say though is that my expectations for SW were probably way too high. I will try revisiting it in the near future and see how it stacks up to these other two movies that I was much more impressed with. Last edited by celticmoon; 03-01-2014 at 09:39 PM. |

Anyway for this it wouldn't exactly be worth it though, as like with many Toei upscales, it doesn't look very good (Lots of DVNR). Not to mention the One Piece Special Edition also crops the episodes from 4:3 to 16:9. |

Same. I only got 16 episodes into One Piece and quit. Not at all because it was bad-- I bought all 3 Amazon exclusive Collection Boxes. It's just I wasn't ready to get into a 600+ episode series. My friend ****ing marathoned the hell out of it and got over 300 episodes in a very short time, but even he stopped completely saying it's slowed down a lot with a ton of filler. If they give it the "kai" treatment, I'll definitely go and double dip or whatever and watch that.

Oh, I'll continue to watch it and buy it as it comes out. One, I want to support it so I can get my favorite arcs in animated form. Two, because I am friends with a few of the English voice actors, so I also want to show them my support.
However, Toei really dropped the ball here. There is no reason I should be watching a flashback to a scene I just saw 15 minutes ago. |

I don't understand why these never-ending Japanese anime shows have to be on the air constantly.... Can't they give it 2 cours a year and have it off the air for the other 2? I stopped watching ONE PIECE long ago because of the filler. Even the manga, at times, feels like it is being stretched out more than it needs to be, so I can only imagine what the TV show is like now.
That really goes for some of the other shows that don't have an ongoing storyline like Sazae-san and Chibimaruko-chan as well. These shows really are a shell of their former selves since they have to crank out an episode every single week, with virtually no break. |

I agree, Oda stretching the story in each arc, or better he is telling the background stories of characters nobody cares about. I want chapters about Shanks and Whitebeard's past and not about a person we might not see anymore in the following arcs. What's even more worse is that he is making a break for 2 or 3 weeks after each 3 chapters, so it takes much longer to tell the story. I even stopped reading the manga and I think I'll wait few more months till I start reading this manga again. Last edited by TheCollector86; 05-18-2015 at 05:25 PM. |
