So here's the deal....
I just received my S470 Blu-Ray player from that Disney Movie Rewards deal. I go this because I just recently got a small HDTV for the bedroom, and wanted to hook a BD player up to it. And so far it works great. Right now in my living room, with my primary set up, I am using a PS3 as my BD player (I actually have 2 PS3s in that set up... an older one with PS2 compatibility that I currently only use for gaming, and a newer 120 GB slim PS3 that I got last year to use for playing movies and to take the extra wear off of my other PS3). So, my question is this... which player, the S470 or the PS3, is supposed to have the overall better PQ and AQ, and better upscaling for DVDs? (With PQ and upscaling being the bigger concern at the moment since I don't have an HD audio system anyway). The reason that I ask is that if the S470 is better of the two in these respects, I will put that one in my living room on my main set up, and move the slim PS3 to the bedroom. But, if there is little or no difference, then I'll just leave my set up as is. Things like disc loading times aren't that big of a concern to me, because that is quick enough on both of these players. |

Ive not seen a newer standalone (last 2 gens), that did not do PQ better than a PS3.
470 all the way. PS3 was ahead of its time for the first couple of years, but it's PQ is soft, compared to new models, IMO. |

I have a 60GB PS3 and a BDP-370 (which is identical to the 470 but won't get an update for 3D.)
Quality is the same for both. I don't see any difference. (For reference I use a Sony VW60 Front projector and my screen is 72x40 which I think is about 90" or something. In other words.... I should be able to see the quality differences pretty well since I have a fairly large screen.) I did see a little better quality on the netflix streaming on the PS3 the other day but that may be related to what I was streaming (since it was animation.. maybe that's easier to compress sometimes.) Like someone said... Try them both and see. PS3 is still awesome (unless you bought an Oppo... then you have to rag on PS3 and claim they have gone bad.) ![]() -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 12-04-2010 at 04:15 PM. |

I have both a PS3 and an Oppo BDP-83, and I'm waiting here patiently for the Fedex truck to deliver my new Oppo 93 pre-release TODAY... I'll have to let you know how much "lesser" a machine the PS3 is compared to the 93, after I get it hooked up and play a few movies...
![]() Folks over on the Oppo 93 thread are saying they are seeing a noticeable improvement in BD playback over Sony players, including the PS3, so I'll have to see for myself... Last edited by FREYMAX 3D; 12-04-2010 at 04:49 PM. |

Most Oppo owners agree the Oppo is the awesome.
![]() (I'm sure Oppo players are really awesome anyways... I think the 370, 470, 570, and 770 players are about same as the PS3 without the gaming and they tend to be significantly cheaper than the Oppo players.) |
