During the past decade Oren Peli has risen from indie filmmaker to bona fide Hollywood mogul, becoming a prolific producer in the wake of his directorial debut, Paranormal Activity. But it’s been many years since he actually directed a film with his post-Paranormal effort falling into some sort of developmental hell.

Originally shot back in 2009, Peli’s Area 51 was seemingly abducted by aliens shortly thereafter, as the subsequent years have provided us with very little information about the film. From what we’ve heard, Peli has been tinkering with it in the editing room quite a bit, and he also had to film some re-shoots back in 2013.

Today Coming Soon broke the news that Area 51 is finally ready for mass consumption, set to receive a one-weekend-only limited engagement exclusively at 16 Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations in May. The film debuts Friday, May 15th, and runs through Sunday, May 17th, with one showtime daily. Tickets are on sale beginning Monday, May 11th.

Additionally, Area 51 will hit VOD and all digital platforms on May 15th.

Area 51 is directed by Oren Peli, written by Oren Peli and Christopher Denham, and produced by Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. The film follows Reid, who has always been obsessed with UFOs. While on a weekend trip to Vegas, he convinces two friends to join him on a mission to break into Area 51, where they find terrifying proof of alien presence. The movie stars Reid Warner, Jamel King, Ben Rovner, and Jelena Nik.
