Default Dexter: Thoughts and predictions [spoilers]

I was going to talk about dexter in the season 4 thread. But I havent seen season 4 yet. So I wont be talking about that just yet. I just finished episode 8 on season one. Man Im loving this show. I have a question though. Am I the only one who thinks the blu-ray PQ isnt that good? Ive seen the reviews here and the video is supposed to be great! So after that I had to throw in another blu-ray movie to make sure someone didnt mess with my pic settings.
Also is their anyone else playing catch up on dexter like Iam?

I actually think the BD's look better than on TV. Maybe that's just me and my TV who knows. There may be some parts that don't look amazing though.

I was playing "catch up" for a while up until maybe the 5th episode into the fourth season. I'd love to watch them all over again.

I think the blu's look damn good.

Amazing show, right up there with Sons of Anarchy and prime 24 (seasons 1, 3, 5) as my favorite of all time.

Outside of Jack Bauer, Dexter is my favorite character. Such an awesome show. I watched all 4 seasons in about a week and a half. Blind bought the first 3 on blu, downloaded the 4th. Can't wait for the 5th.

Dexter has a very stylized look, so if you're comparing it to movies, you may not like the pq, but the show has a lot of blown highlights and crushed shadows(on the broadcast), so I imagine that was the intent. There is also a lot of color usage to set mood.

What exactly don't you like? Details? Grain? Colors? Sharpness? ...

At times it looks dull. Then other times it looks great. Some nite scenes seem very grainy others are clean. But the grain doesnt bother me as much as the dull colors. But I still love the show.

Season 2 is great, but it is a notch below Season 1 as far as greatness goes.

I liked season 2 a lot but for whatever reason my sister didn't

Season 3 is good but not as good as 1 and 2.

Season 4 is amazing. Starts out slow but builds up

Killer season 5 spoilers!

With six months standing between now and the season five premiere of Dexter, I tried to pry scoop out of Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter and the rest of the gang—begging didn't work, and neither did bribing!—and while they were a tightlipped group, we fans did manage to learn a thing or two about what's to come while moderating the show panel at Paley Fest Thursday night.

Spoiler Alert! If you have still haven't seen the Dexter season four finale, please look no further. All of what you'll see after the jump will definitely ruin it for you.

Where's The Dark Passenger heading next? How is Michael's health? And how did deeply private Michael and Jennifer handle a fan question about their marriage? Here are the highlights you need to know:

[Show spoiler]1. When I asked if anyone in the audience hadn't seen the season four finale, in which--again, not kidding about the Spoiler Alert here!--Rita was killed at the hands of Trinity, Miss Julie Benz was the first to jokingly raise her hand. Still, she says she's come to terms with what happened and "I don't think much about it any more."

2. There will be no time jumping, as some fans have speculated. In fact, executive producer Sara Colleton promises we'll "be able to grieve" the tragic loss of Rita, and see how Dexter responds to his world being turned upside-down. "I look forward to the comedy that will come along with that, because Dexter has never been pitied before," said Michael C. Hall.

3. We'll "discover that it changes things" between Dex and Deb now that she knows the Ice Truck Killer (Bryan Moser) was his real brother. "That's a lot for her to suppress," Michael explains. "It's big."

4. Michael, who announced his battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in January, looked healthy and happy, and told the audience that he's doing well. "I'm great on the health front." In fact, he says he just had a treatment last night (pretty amazing he made it to the event) and only has one treatment left, but says he is already cancer free. Huge round of applause for that. Michael also received a standing ovation--of every single person in the audience--when he came out on stage, which I've never seen in the many years covering the Paley Fest. Pretty cool. Earlier on the press line, Michael's wife Jennifer told me that his Golden Globe win (amid all the frightening news in January) was "the best night of my life."

5. When a fan in the audience addressed the "elephant in the room," and asked Michael and Jennifer what it's like to be married in real life while playing brother and sister on Dexter, Jennifer told Michael "You answer," but then cut him off with a "keep it short" as he started to answer, "Well, we met at work..." and then she quickly told him "that's enough" so he laughed and stopped talking. "That's basically us in a nutshell right there," he said, as everyone laughed. It was pretty cute, and I can tell you that backstage these two seem very happy, hand in hand. She's obviously a huge support to him and vice versa.

6. According to departing show runner Clyde Phillips, the writers had Trinity kill Rita in the bathtub (instead of having her jump off the building, which seemed to better fit his pattern) to bring the season full circle. "We wanted to end the season in Dexter's house, where it started," Clyde said, adding that they also wanted to return to the iconic image of the baby covered in you-know-what (I can't say it), as Dexter was as a child.

7. Dexter will have to come to terms with what Rita's death means for both his stepchildren, Cody and Astor, and their infant son, Harrison. "When they first told me I was getting killed off," said Julie, "I thought, 'What about the baby!?' I forgot it was a TV baby and not real."

8. Are newlyweds Bautista and Laguerta already done for? Not yet, but Lauren Velez is hoping "for this huge wrench to be thrown in the works." Why?!

9. Desmond Harrington wants Quinn to hook up with...Masuka (C.S. Lee)?! Just jokes, but of a possible relationship with Deb, he told us: "They're both wounded people and they definitely have a chemistry."

10. If Julie's stint on Desperate Housewives and her new ABC pilot No Ordinary Family don't pan out, she told me she's destined to be a popstar! Don't act like you don't remember her breathtaking rendition of Karma Chameleon in the minivan last season! "That was the most mortifying moment of my life," she joked.

11. Dexter won't automatically be cleared of all wrongdoing in Rita's death. In fact, MCH told me "he's in hot water"—no pun intended. How will he explain all that blood and Rita missing, when he can't tell the force that he knew Arthur Mitchell? Will Battista remember Mitchell being at the station visiting Dexter? All questions to come.

12. Julie's fave moment? Dexter proposing to Rita. Jen's? Pulling up to Dexter's house in Quinn's bass-bangin' Cadillac. "You can feel it in your spine." Classic!

13. Ick factor alert! Sara took the focus off the awkward Michael-Jennifer real-life couple Q by pronouncing that Deb and Dex aren't blood related, so a coupling isn't out of the question. Say wha?!? Here's hoping they never go there. Sorry, Dex, but Deb already did the whole serial killer romance thing and it didn't work out so well!

14. The showrunners wouldn't give me a definitive answer on whether or not there would be a new big bad in season five, but Sara did hint towards a no, saying the focus will really be turned back onto Dexter and his internal struggle with everything going on—something the series has never done before.

15. Can Dexter ever have any sense of normalcy and suppress his inner demons? For the time being, "the Dark Passenger is definitely back." Waaah!

Check back later for exclusive interviews with the cast and producers of Dexter, but in the meantime, do you think season five has the potential to out-do last year?

Some of this may overlap with what Wyldeman posted, but here goes...

[Show spoiler]According to Entertainment Weekly, the creators will not jump ahead past Rita's (Julie Benz) death from last season.

"We need to see Dexter go through the process that we'd all have to go through if such a horrible thing had happened to us. We need to see him doing everything from the big emotional things like grieving the loss, to the mundane things like arranging a funeral, getting the kids dressed, and all the other things that are usually done for men because their wives or mothers do them," she confirmed.

The crew are also going to be moving away from the typical formula of having Dexter face off against another killer. Instead, they will delve deeper into the main character's psyche.

"John Lithgow is a tough act to follow. If there was ever a year that we could take a step back from the big bad formula and go deeper into Dexter and his psychology, this would be that year."

She added that the serial killer will still do some murdering, saying: "Dexter has a dark passenger that won't go away no matter how much he yearns to be normal. That rears up and needs to be dealt with."

Of a potential romance for Dexter, Colleton emphasised: "Anything is possible, but I don't think Dexter will be in the mood for dating or love any time soon. That's not even on our radar right now."

I'm glad they finally are planning on taking
[Show spoiler]a year off from the big bad
. I might be alone in my feeling, but each season of Dexter seems to be the exact same, I was so damned tired halfway through the Lithgow season, knowing that he will befriend, and than kill him, YAY, cause we've only seen that 3 other seasons......at that point I said to myself, either kill Deb who might be the most annoying female character in television history, or kill Rita because at this point she brings nothing to the show, and I was
[Show spoiler]happy to see her in the bathtub full of blood. Now don't get me wrong I love Julie Benz,
but the show was continuously getting staler and more boring with each episode, I was about to completely give up on Dexter all together unless something big happened in the finale, enter the
[Show spoiler]bathtub of blood.
Now I will atleast check out what is going on next season, but I truly don't love the show like I once did. Once the incredibly bland Jimmy Smits came on scene it was all down hill from there.......

I strongly disagree about Smits. I've never been a fan of his, but he knocked it out of the park. He was the 2nd best guest star on the show, after Lithgow, in my opinion.

yeah, I haven't finished season 4 yet but Smits was my favorite so far..."bland"? yeah right

he brought some skilled acting to the set so poor Dex wouldn't have to carry the burden of offsetting batista and his sister/real life wife.

Something about Smits has always just made me very annoyed. I've never liked him in anything, and I just can't stand the guy, his acting to me, always leaves me looking for the salt, to add some kind of taste to his blandness,
