![]() Only a few days ago, I was shocked to learn Covenant might not be shooting in 3D. Now I'm wondering if they'll bother with a conversion. On the latter score, I imagine they will for foreign territories; fingers crossed on a solid stereo version for the US. |

That being a R rated trailer, it may be a good reason we didn't see the 3D details, but according to the 2011 article above, Ridley Scott says he'll never work without 3D again, being a big fan of stereo 3D. Prometheus was in stereo 3D, so the chances are good Alien Covenant will be also, as with his prior films including The Martian 3D. |

Ridley Scott seems to have a set it and forget it style when filming 3D, where during some of the less dramatic shots, we tend to get a lot of dialed back, uninteresting mild 3D, but once the action heats up, he cranks up the stereo 3D to medium to strong 3D layers and pop outs.
I do agree though, Prometheus and The Martian both look better thanks to the (mostly filmed) 3D (some converted shots in there too). Exodus, being his other 3D film as well. So he's 3 for 3 in a row for 3D films. There was no word that he wouldn't be doing the same for Alien Covenant. |

This would be good in 3D for sure.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if he films or converts the 3D. If he's got the gear already, he likely filmed it in 3D if he's in charge again as with Prometheus.
The trailer looks hopeful, with more horror as with the original. Can't wait to see this in 3D. Quote:

Don't get me wrong, I've seen some fantastic post-conversions (and as you point out, there are often shots in native 3D movies that are converted), but my wife isn't a fan of 3D, so our agreement is that we only go to the ones shot in the format. (Even she can usually tell the difference a few minutes into the movie.) Anyway, it's pretty unclear to me exactly which camera was used for the bulk of this film, let alone whether or not they're using a 3D rig. In an interview the DP said he wanted to use the Alexa 65, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is different than the one I'm seeing up-close in a photo in this Collider story: http://collider.com/prometheus-2-danny-mcbride-image/ Last edited by 2awesome4apossum; 12-29-2016 at 07:41 AM. Paul WS Anderson ditched filming in 3D for Resident Evil Final Chapter, but we'll see what his stance is on his next action movie. Hopefully Ridley continues with filmed 3D as he said he would. |

Well, that's disappointing to see if Alien Covenant 3D is all converted. Maybe he's working with a new crew that didn't want to deal with the more complex stereo 3D factor on the set and had to rush through. Who knows. Here's hoping for a strong 3D conversion.

But it does make sense. All released on-set photos I've seen have indicated a 2D setup...I've been holding out hope, but whatever. Also, according to some RED camera forum I was browsing earlier, the Alexa XT was thr primary camera used (which fits the photo I linked to above), but some elements were also shot using Red Dragons. Bet they'll go for a 2K finish again. Oh, well. |

Paul, I actually updated the movie database here, changing Alien: Covenant from native to conversion as the current best guess. Don't take that as a primary source. It can be edited again if we find primary evidence suggesting native at a future date.
Current guess is based on no 3D rigs in IMDB tech specs, no 3D crew members listed under IMDB cast and crew, and a rumor of a 2D shoot posted on realorfake3D forum. http://realorfake3d.freeforums.net/t...alien-covenant Last edited by BleedOrange11; 01-01-2017 at 05:16 AM. |

I remember Ridley Scott had his camera crew use go pro small cameras for the interior vehicle shots in The Martian, and those were converted. With the new one here, only hope is if he used hand held, small 3D cameras with limited abilities if no 3D camera rigs were reported on set.
