Bored to Death: The Complete First Season Blu-ray Review

I see that Bored to Death season 1 released yesterday on blu-ray. I've seen some ads on HBO for season 2 and it seems pretty funny. I've always been a Zack Galifianakis fan ever since I first saw him perform standup on Comedy Central way back when. Has anyone purchased this blu or seen the show on HBO? How many episodes and how long is each one? How funny is it compared to other HBO comedies like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Eastbound and Down? If you have the blu, how is the quality of the blu compared to other HBO blu's?

I think Board to Death is a great series. I am looking forward to season 2. I may buy it on BD if the price drop to Black Friday pricing. Otherwise, I do not need to own it. It's very good though but I just can't buy every title released...or can I?

I watched the first season of Bored to Death. It was pretty funny. I think there were 8 episodes of about 30 minutes apiece.

I've watched about 4 episodes On Demand and it's pretty amusing. I wouldn't say it's up to par compared to Curb Your Enthusiasm or Eastbound and Down. But I've read that as the season progressed, the better the episodes got. It's only eight episodes that are about 30 minutes long.

I'd buy it but $34 is a little too high for 8 episodes.

Hi everyone! I posted practically the same message in a Modern Family thread but since I have the same question, I'm gonna write that down here too :

I'd very much like to order the 1st season of Bored to Death.

I just want to know if someone who has already got this Blu-ray set could please check an episode with french subtitles on, and then tell me if these are International french subtitles and not french québécois subtitles.

I don't know much but these are several ways to spot french québécois subtitles :

- If exclamation (or interrogation) points are right next to the last word of a sentence without a space between them (basically just like english), it means it's french québecois.
- If you see any "hostie" or "criss de tabernak de salaud" when it comes to swear words, it means it's french quebecois, and thus I won't buy the set because it can be really disturbing. If you see "merde" or "putain", that's great, that means it's french/International french and then I'll buy it.

I would be really kind of you to check that out for me, so thank you in advance. That's the kind of thing thaht won't be posted anywhere on Amazon.com for instance, that's a really specific kind of detail but that's an important one. The 1st season is in my basket and I would definitely buy it in the next few weeks if you can confirm that these are International french subtitles in it.

PS : By the way, if anyone knows if the french subtitles on the 1st season of Modern Family (also Region free) are International french or french québécois subtitles, please let me know too.

I've only seen an episode or two and really liked it. I wonder if they ever plan to release all 24 episodes in one box. I'd probably pick that up.

How did you first find out that the show was being canceled?

In years past, I'd be told to get to work on the next season by mid-November, so I knew for a while it wasn't looking great. I kind of feel like I've been in the stages of mourning: denial, teeth gnashing, acceptance, confusion — wait, that's not one of the stages, is it? The show was like a Summer Stock theater group to me. We'd all get together for three months and get incredibly close. It was sort of like the circus life. And our friendship was somewhat based on this shared purpose, so it's sad to lose that. When I told Ted Danson the news, he said, "I can't believe we're not going to get together and laugh for three months."

Was it because of the ratings? Or did the network have one too many incest themes on its shows?

The incest didn't have anything to do with it. HBO said they were pleased with the show, creatively, so I always had hope there was room in the budget for us. But Sunday night is their night. They don't have a lot of room for their original programming on the schedule, and being on Monday nights was a problem. That's never a good night for HBO, in the sense of traditional live viewership, since you're going up against Two and a Half Men and Monday Night Football. And I totally understand the whole thing of not wanting to sit down when someone tells you to. But if you count all the DVR, HBO Go, replay viewership, we were in the millions. That's one of the things that's annoyed me a little bit about the coverage of the cancellation — the numbers were not weak. We've done extremely well in nontraditional viewership, and we've had a very generous critical response. Maybe we need to change the model.

Bored to Death is an awesome show! It's funny and just plain good. Ted Danson plays a really funny character. The shows are half hour shows and the video quality is excellent. I just ordered seasons 1 and 2... can't wait for 3 to come out! I'm upset with HBO over them cancelling the show. Now the only thing to do is to buy the seasons to support Jonathon Ames and his future projects. For anyone who hasn't seen this show, I highly recommend it... especially with a drink!

Agreed, Bored To Death is a wonderful show! I already got the first 2 seasons, but if a nice "Complete Series" set comes along - I'll probably get that too! I just wish the series ending wasn't so... Creepy...

What lame excuse is that anyway? HBO claiming they have no room for it! Typical

You didn't end the season with a cliffhanger per se, unless you count Jonathan and his half-sister kissing. What was up with that?

I want to be clear: Some people thought he was never going to tell her [that he's discovered they're blood-related]. I don't want people to think he wouldn't tell her. He wants to tell her, but he was just weakened in that moment. And the idea that they're siblings is so abstract, because he didn't grow up with her. It's hard for him to conceptualize. So he kisses her in the moment, but I wanted that last shot to mirror his confusion, so it's spinning — almost like the start of the season when he's on the circle with the knives. It's vertigo. But in the next season, I was going to put her in a sanitarium. She was going to have a total breakdown. And in case Isla Fisher wasn't available, I'd just need that one shot of her on a bench or in Switzerland, for her incest cure.

I wasn't trying to go crazy with the incest idea, I was trying to comment that in this modern age, it's more of a mathematical possibility [to have accidental incest]. I wrote this before the article came out, but there was a story about a ***** donor who had 150-plus children, or others who provided most of the ***** at a ***** bank, who claimed to have genius *****. All these things have happened plenty. And part of where I was going with Jonathan was that he was a 21st-century Oedipus. Part of being Oedipus, the first detective in literature, is finding out who is your real father. And when you're searching for the truth, some unusual things happen, like inadvertently sleeping with your half-sister.
