Default Dodgy HDMI or bad player?

Using a region free modded Sony BDP-S1200 and on occasion it will stutter and lose signal (my surround sound bar will jolt on and off while this happens like it has lost input). Nothing to do with disc because it's happened on a number now and on fresh out the packaging Blu Rays too. These stutters never occur in the same place - i.e. I could go back to the scene of the stutter a second time and it would play through without hesitation.

Could this be an HDMI problem or do you reckon it's to do with the fact the player is modded?

Easiest thing to do is to try another cable, but if it's losing signal your TV should be displaying the info bar constantly (as the input signal is going on and off), if it's not it could be the player that's at fault. It's possible the mod is faulty or needs looking at.

Try a different cable and a few DVDs and BDs to see if the image keeps on acting up. Another possibility is it's the sound bar, they can be finicky at the best of times, so cut that out of the equation (don't worry if it's just audio going into it) and plug the player into your TV directly.

Cheers. I've swapped the cables over and will have a look tomorrow (my previous one was quite long - not sure if that's got anything to do with it). The hard part is testing it though because the problem is intermittent and completely unpredictable.

Could the sound system be responsible? I didn't know it could affect the visual side of things.

A long cable could certainly suffer from intermittent problems. If you can find a short cable, less than 2m and try the player with that. Another test would be to use your longer cable and bend it along its length whilst your BD player is running, if there's a break in the cable you'll soon see a change in the display.

If your sound system and Blu-ray player are connected by HDMI, then it could be an issue, so it's easier to remove it from the chain while you test another cable, that way if there's no problem with the cable and player, but it returns when you plug the sound bar back in, then you know that it's the device with the issue.

Thanks. The old HDMI looked a little frayed in places at the back (hadn't noticed that before) so I might have found my problem. Will watch a film on it tonight anyway to check if I've fixed it.

My sound system's connected via digital coax to the TV directly so I'm not sure it will have any effect on the Blu Ray player.

I had issues with my HDMI cables almost five years after purchase. Monoprice 6ft, if I remember correctly category 2 branded. Then I had issues with my receiver. But never the player. Doesn't mean it can't happen.

That's sounds like it's the problem!

No, as you said if it's just a digital coaxial, then it won't have any bearing on the video, but if the player was an issue you would have noticed the sound cutting out too.

Looks like it's fine now after replacing the lead.

Oh, and The Searchers looks insanely beautiful on Blu Ray.

Yes
Searchers is an awesome blu-ray both in format and story.
