Those aren't official announcements, though it's more than confirmed that it's being released. Likely February or March I'd guess.

Yep. Janus is touring it theatrically now, so 1Q next year seems likely. Looking forward to it.

A masterpiece that is unfortunately largely forgotten today.

Until the End of the World was screening theatrically a year ago, and it too was revealed to be coming from Criterion... And it's been a year now with zero movement on Criterion's part. So don't get your hopes up for a timely release - Criterion doesn't care about such things.

Seeing Tampopo in a theatre is the best way to see it at first, due to
[Show spoiler]a great visual joke at the start which works best if you are in an audience.

The movie is over 30 years old, nothing about ANY release would be considered "timely."

And it has nothing to do about whether or not they "care." Titles are released when they are ready.

Fantastic news. I've been waiting to replace the truly terrible DVD for a long time now.

They released four of Wenders' films this past year, which is more than they usually release for any filmmaker in any given year. And they haven't indicated they are working on UtEotW's special features.

We know that extras for TAMPOPO are in production (the photo from their instagram), and have been in production for a while now (in an interview with Marty Gross from last month, he said, " Right now we’re doing Tampopo, so I went to the museum dedicated to [the director] Juzo Itami, and I spent three days scanning photos, stills, booklets and flyers.")

Criterion Tampopo (1985) - April 25, 2017

Quote:
The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges, our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.

While I do somewhat like the cover, was anyone hoping they would just replicate the poster art? I think that's perfect.

When I saw the cover pop up on the main page the first thing out of my mouth was Oooooooooo just because I remembered that this is my favorite food porn movie. It's definitely worth the full price.

Sugoi desu ne!

Now, I gotta try this myself -- I've quite a few questions for the pork.
.. and since we both love bacon, this would be like one of those dinner with andres.

I had forgotten about this movie since I watched it in college. It's so charming! Day one for me.
