Angry Why can't I buy it?

I had the oppurtunity to watch Star Wars Episode IV in high def last night at a friends house(cable). Looked great! Why can I not buy it? I mean I see what I want, and am willing to pay for it why then can I not go to the store, purchase it and be happy. Seems ludicrous to me that it be available yet I can't own it. Why if they broadcast it can I not own it on a media of my choosing. Just plain stupid. It seems all the technical elements are there yet politics of the matter limit my enjoyment. Its not like Lucas and 20th Century would loose money. Hopefully a day not too far into the future people will have the ability to purchase any content they want and keep it to a medium of their choosing. I know some elements are already in place. I don't know the way his cable works(can he keep the downloaded movie indefinately?)since I don't have cable but love movies.

Just my rant for the day.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away...

Lucas hasn't released the movie yet. HD formats are both pretty young. I'm sure it'll be available soon enough.

Considering that Lucas is responsible for the Star Wars universe, you think he'd make more Star Wars movies. With the number of movies he's directed in his career, he's averaging an almost Stanley Kubrick-like pace.

If anyone can think of what he should be doing on the planet besides making Star Wars movies, I'd like to hear it.

I'd much rather see American Graffiti on BD than Episodes 1-3.

Ironically, the very first time I *ever* heard the term Blu-ray was in an article written well before it was announced that Star Wars 4-6 was coming to DVD. The article claimed that he was not going to release SW to SD because he was waiting for Blu-ray technology to arrive in order to make the films look the absolute best.

Well, as we all know, he released the *modified* versions in SD and made a killing. Then he released the unmodified versions in the laserdisc "format" (which I still have, so I didn't buy them in SD) and they didn't sell well.

Now, we're all wishing that he'd stuck with what that original article claimed and waited for Blu-ray.

I suspect, as others have remarked, we might now have to wait until 2009 or 2010 for the Blu-ray editions. He could, though, do as Spielberg did with Close Encounters and have both versions on one disk, and you could then choose which version of each film you wanted to watch.

<Scratches head> Well, he has Lucas games. But it is true. For someone of such renown he isn't remembered for much. Kind of like the Anna Nicole Smith syndrome. "Famous for being famous." (May she rest in peace.)

Maybe he doesn't need the money and sees no reason to release it. He's pretty unconventional in his business thinking, and how he sees his own work. I saw him in an interview and was asked how does he feel that people treat Star Wars like a religion and follow its teaching thusly? He didn't like the idea at all! He feels people should focus on real religion, and a real God.

Maybe he is waiting for those technical hashes to finish. Maybe he is waiting for BD100. What ever it is, the guy is remarkably rich for someone who moves so slow in business.

He's currently working on the new Indy Jones film with Spielberg. I've also read that he's filming a live-action Star-Wars series for TV, although it hasn't been sold to any television network yet. Sorry, I don't have any links to this! Lastly, he's due to freshen up the Star Tours attraction at Disney World and Disneyland. Rumors also point to another new Lucas-based attraction or Land at a Disney park.

Yes, the man's quite busy but I would LOVE to see the Star Wars flicks released to Blu-ray.

I like the idea of using seamless branching to put multiple cuts of SW on BD. He could easily go between the digitally restored and the re-mastered/edited editions.
I still think he did a crappy job on the restoration for the first movie. Why? Cause in one scene, where they are being attacked by Tie Fighters, the big brownish boxes over the tie fighters that they used to make the effects is clearly seen! It looks awful and with all the other changes they made, they couldn't fix this one scene? If it was meant to be a HUD, it looks very very bad, and more like an effects error than a HUD. It just upset me that he left it that way.

I think a release like Star Wars won't happen for a while. Probably not until the format war is over and/or enough people have Blu-Ray to make it worth while to release.

Granted, it is Star Wars and it will sell no matter what.

But, look at the DVD release. The Trilogy came out in 2004 when DVD was fully well established and had pretty much completely taken over VHS.

It was a title that people had been hoping to get for a while, and the demand built up and grew, and so when it was finally released, it sold in huge numbers.

If that set had been released 4 or 5 years earlier, while DVD was still young and not in as many households, the sales would probably have never hit the same record. Sure, it still would have sold well enough. But what would be lost is the anticipation of the release that everyone had. People who hadn't jumped on the format yet wouldn't care as much. And then when they eventually would jump onboard with it, they'd have a lot of catching up to do with buying movies already available. While Star Wars would be a big one, there would be a lot of people taking a "I'll wait and get it later" attitude, since they would take for granted that it's already available, and wouldn't have that same level of anticipation.

Gradually more sets would be sold, but it would likely never equate to the big BOOM when the set was finally released at the appropriate time.

While I would love to have all of the SW movies in Hi-Def now, I can understand why they aren't out yet.

I really hope those rumors pan out, although I hate the idea of the simulator ride going anywhere other than the Death Star run. And I'll miss Pee-Wee, and George's cameo (good thing he didn't try for an acting career).

I'd also really like to see a new Indy attraction at WDW.

The earliest you would see them is xmas 08, but im thinking more along the lines of xmas 09. he's got major tv projects that he is working on for star wars (100, 1hour episodes) and he's involved with indy iv. so blu-ray releases have been put on the back burner. he's released star wars twice now on dvd in the past 3-4 years, so another release this fast would make him look greedy, and even if he is greedy, he probably doesn't want to be percieved that way.

There will not be a Star Wars release on Blu until there's at least one more SW release on DVD, probably a 1-6 boxset.

Well I think that since Lucas pretty much waited till every other major title was released on DVD before putting Star Wars on DVD, you can expect the same from him when your dealing with HD. Probably will be released in 2012 to mark the 35 anniversay of Star Wars. By then Blu should be the only HD format around and safe enough for Lucas to release on High-Def.

But I feel your pain.

Episode 1 on DVD sold 2.2 million units in its first week.

1st week blockbuster new release sales on BD, on the other hand, are doing very well to reach 5% of that number.

well isn't he doing something w/SW TV shows soon? I think I read somewhere he won't write much of it, tho - which is a good thing, 'cause he is a god awful writer.

Lucas is always at the forefront of new technology when it comes to making the movie in question. Episode 2 was like the first (or first 5 anyway) movie to use a digital camera instead of 35mm film.

Seems that doesn't carry down to consumer level. Maybe we have to wait for the first THX certified BD player

I'd like to point your attention to how long it took SW to come to DVD.

That should give you an answer about how long you'll be waiting.

Oh, and DVD wasn't even in a heated battle like HD-something and BLU are.

Just calm down and wait. It will take time to see some of your favorite shows/movies come out on Blu-ray.
