I was going to do a little review of this but could not find the thread in the movies section.
I saw this this weekend, and it was good not great. The satire was pretty humorous and it covered A LOT of race relations. Sadly, the stinger at the end of the film is [Show spoiler] I felt like the film was partially made to counter internet comments, such as "Why don't I make a film called dear black people?" is an actual question addressed within the first five minutes. But thinking this film approaches the subject as us vs. them would be a mistake, as it's much more complex. I would rate this a 3.5/5 Last edited by Snicket; 11-10-2014 at 05:43 AM. |

It's too bad this isn't finding an audience in the theater, but hopefully it will on disc. The movie isn't about pointing fingers. The title is the most confrontational thing about the movie, and it's less about racism, and more about identity. I don't know if it's great filmmaking, and would have liked to seen some more nuance in the characters, but it's funny, smart, poignant, and demands to be seen, and really opens up the kind of discussion about race we should be having in this country.

Just picked this up on Blu and can't wait to watch it at least 10 times this week haha.
I really hope this film finds an audience now that it's on physical and digital media and viewers don't take it so literal. I would love it if this could spark a positive conversation but I have a feeling it will end up taken entirely too seriously and be seen as an "attack on white people". |

This is definitely one of my favorite films of last year. The writing, direction, and acting were all really great.
As someone said earlier, it's more about identity and how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. As for the topics of race, the film does point out ways in which racism manifests both consciously and subconsciously on both sides. A part of me really wishes that the film had a different, less incendiary title. I know that's the point of the title, but I feel like it causes people to have a snap judgement and get turned off to the movie. |

For a controversial movie that eventually led to an even more controversial Netflix original (I didn't like either of them BTW), there's hardly any activity in this thread. I guess it kept the moderators busy

I saw this tonight and liked it a lot. I binged the Netflix series yesterday and liked that even more than the film. The series has room to breathe in its 10-episoes as opposed to the film, which runs just under 2 hours.
Glad the series will return in 2018. |

Do you actually agree with the messages they try to spread? I sure don't.
