Default It's really hard to find Blu Ray movies in here unless Online

no wonder local business are struggling in the world in in Australia, I am finding at least where i Live here it'a almost impossible to buy Blu Ray movies unless it's a new release/

Where i love in Bathurst we only have Big W Target and crappy overpriced Sanity. I am finding I have to do all my shopping from JB Hi fi online and can get classic movies for only $12 each with $1 posting and wait 3 or 4 days and I get it in the mail!

Why hasn't the stores suck as Big W and Target stocked with Blu Ray movies???? it seems 80% of stuff in there is just DVDs, and if you look around for a hour their is a small collection of Blu rays MOSTLY only new release stuff. but they still end up being a few dollars more then JB HI Fi

when do you think Australia will actually finally move forward and make DVDs obsolete and 2nd nature? It would be nice to actually go down to a shop read the back of a box and buy something and take it home then have to shop online! It's bad enough in this country we pay 40% more then the rest of the world and half the country still can't even get ADSL outside of Sydney Melbourne etc.

Anyone else have trouble finding blu rays unless it's online? this country is so far behind technology it's not funny!

I have JB at my local Westfield and I've bought a few movies from K-mart (but they suck overall).

Well, I'm assuming consumers are talking with their wallets and the average joe just prefers to buy DVDs.

It says a lot about Kmart that they no longer sell Blu-ray players, and haven't sold them for over a year now.

JB Hi Fi in Perth are pretty decent but probably still quite a few titles you can't find there. I would really like to see an independent video store that stocks pretty much the entire range of blu rays released in Aus. There are only like 8000 or something in print anyway. Maybe less.

Agree Kmart used to be excellent for purchasing DVD and blu-ray. Was In my local suburban Sydney store the other day and there selection was mostly DVD with a tiny selection of Blu-ray. Mostly overpriced new release titles. Not even worth going there anymore. The same with BigW. Target not much better either. JB seem to have the best selection and prices for local store an on-line. If not its onto the net and order from overseas for better deals and hard to find titles.

Yep. I remember going into Kmart for years and seeing racks of $8 and $12 Blu-rays, with an extensive collection in between, usually at great prices.

For a while it was simply new releases, though they have some good deals (saw Gone Girl for $20 yesterday). It seems they've brought back a limited $8 range, maybe they're testing the waters again?

Just as a side note, the new standard Kmart store layout is godawful. And I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's disorganised and it's easy to get lost... But then again, that is the point. If it's disorganised and easy to get lost, people find themselves in the store for longer, and may stumble upon more things to buy. It's disgusting business practise.

I will download TV shows etc that we don't get here but I will always buy them if I really like them.

and it's pointless to download Blu Ray quality for a start you be downloading up to 50 gig (which in Aust is another joke that we are the only country in the world that has a internet cap)

at to that the price of of buying a blu ray disk printing off cover art and case it would cost more then to buy the actual copy.

I don;t have a K Mart here anymore but boy has it got crap recently !

I never thought of Kmart and Big W as places one could reasonably look for movies. There's just nothing there. It's not worth going to and entering the store and walking all the way to the back just to be disappointed every time.

yeah I agree although most people I know just download 720p HDTV rips or blu rips and are happy with that. And leave them on their HDDs if they like them.

To be fair, I never ever see people at K-Mart, Target or Big W purchase movies whether DVDs or BDs in the first place anyway. It's always sooo empty. People just download shit really, it's an Australian thing I suppose.

It's because everyone goes to JB Hi Fi for movies. Why would they go to Big W, Kmart or Target when even the most uninformed buyer can see that they barely have anything and the prices are ridiculous?

ok..... Australian businesses are 'struggling' for a few reasons.... but since this is a forum on Blu-rays lets just discuss that :

1. so Bathurst has a BigW / Target and inSanity. inSanity have recently had some good deals - such as the 5 for $55 (and the occassional free shipping) - still despise that they have to 'open' every disc and put the container outside. But at least they have deals. Target looked like getting rid of all of their Blu with a recent 50% off sale (I've not been back to one recently so I have no idea what is going on there).

A lot of the B&M stores have 'clicked' that many consumers DON'T wish to pay a premium for the same product type; which is why DVDs still maintain a massive presence in stores : they are CHEAP and the distributors are doing no favours to Blu. You can blame their 'greed' at still maintaining a price difference on new titles (granted I never buy a new release)

2. JB and shipping : look at this way - if you are in the city you can drop into a JB and grab something, if it's on the shelf. There's the 'cost' of getting into town, the cost of time looking, lining up, getting movie info from a 'hipster' (do you really work here ??) - VERSUS spending 99c for that same hipster to find the Blu, put it in a package, send it in the mail, and have a postie deliver it in a few days (so what if is a few days... you could always order something from Amazon CA - and expect to see it in 4-5 mths !!) Sure it's nice to see whats on the back cover (smallish print, a massive barcode, speelling misstakes....) - but you can always see if someone nice on here will do that for you.

4. 40% more than the rest of the world. Surprisingly this in not always the case - the JB specials - the 20% off - the odd BigW 'special' (well that was a time ago) sometimes makes shopping more pleasurable than doing the same in the USA. You 'think' that we have poor stock and prices - then visit Best Buy, or Walmart !! Walmart's discount 'bins' are worse than JB - with the 'cheap holey' Blu-ray covers, the bin is in many stores just a disaster - covers with holes, torn etc. And Best Buy... gee the prices range from WTF to why bother ?? They now MIX the DVDs and Blu together !! Over the past few years, visiting SoCal and Vegas, the stock in stores there is greatly reducing, each time I come back with less. And as for Walmart - I've learnt my 'lessons' : identify if its a GOOD one by the carpark - has it got shades, nice cars, nice area - if not - then don't bother. And as for getting rid of DVDs... sadly that doesn't look like happening for a long long time. Some people just don't care about 'quality'.

Whilst we have all malls here, within walking distance between some B&Ms, in the US, you have to drive drive drive to a store, taking the chance that something special might be there.

5. ADSL and technology !!! Gotta feel the pain there - when I have my mates in Los Angeles getting speeds in excess of 200mbs - and me back here in Sydney with 1/50th of that - then that's the fault of a pathetic Govt and it's backers (* though we shouldn't be talking about downloads on here !!).

I'm STUNNED when i pick up a JB or other retailers brochure and see TVs in excess of $4000 !! Oh... it's UHD .. or $K .. sorry....4K. I have a nice last of the line 65in Samsung Plasma boxed still in the garage, whilst there are other Full HD sets in the house. Who is spending that money on something ?? Are these the same ones then going and buying a soundbar ??

Best decision is to buy a region free player : the world is then your oyster.

Yeah I just bought a Blu ray player for $100 because my PS4 doesn't play region free blu ray... blu ray players are cheap but you know where they get you ??? $40 for a HDMI cable!!!!! I have no idea how much that cost in the USA but that is ridiculous! mind you that is the best brand of HDMI cable, don't bother with those crappy Big W $20 ones that people buy with the low transfer rate.

There are rumors that JB HI fi will come to bathurst and if it doesn't I can see myself being very broke! I might have to check out more of Sanity here, but basically that place is more for the Teen generation, you always go into there and hear crap like Taylor Swift and chick flick heaven sales!

The only thing with JB HI fi is they don't tell you about extras on the website of different version (the odd one they do) which is why this site is great to find information of what I am buying

no one should be paying THAT much for HDMI cable !! (or $100+ 'Monster' ones at Harvey either)

MSY
http://www.msy.com.au/nswonline/311-hdmi-cableist

3 metres for $9 !! (no issues with these ones - use them on my 3D players)

or
go via Staticice !!
http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/sear...?q=hdmi&spos=3

Obviously this site is good for details / extras - look at DVDCOMPARE.NET http://dvdcompare.net/ as well - it all comes down to whom is willing to update the data (story of my job !!)

err yeah, a good quality HDMI cable can be obtained for about $5, high transfer rate and all.

See the Selby Acoustics website for other examples in addition to the above.

Also, I would say that local prices on blus come down much quicker than overseas, within a few mths, everything seems to end up in JB's 2 for 20 or 2 for 30 sales, which when combined with the frequent 20% offs, makes buying locally pretty decent (especially now with the dollar....).

Yeah local prices are good at the moment. The only issue is range.

I think we have it pretty good with prices. Every pay I fill up an amazon basket but usually I end up buying stuff locally because I can get more for my money. When I used to buy DVD I found it was the opposite and would buy most of my stuff from Amazon.

alright having read your replies I went to Sanity managed to get 5 movies for $55 but I tell you what from all the movies I had on my list I couldn't find many I wanted that they had on sale, really had to find 5 movies that I wanted in my blu ray collection. There just a stack of chick flick crap like Horrible bosses and Pitch Perfect etc.

They are still $20 each if you don't buy the 5. one thing I really disliked is that the packaging at Sanity isn't wrapped up the disks are at the back and cases at the front, and you have to pick off the price off the front all that sticky shit, have to use Preme to get it off!

Call me OCD about it but that's the way I tressure my collection and cases to be perfect! anyhow I picked up some good movies from there in the end, but I'd struggle to find 5 more now out of the list of 200 classic films on want on blu ray!
