I've noticed that the 1960 movie 'Spartacus' will be updated to a 4k treatment, although it's obviously a 1080p disc. It certainly does need the treatment, as the original Blu-ray was nothing short of awful. However, I can't help thinking that it would be just as easy for the studio to make this into a 4k catalog title, ready for release when the first 4k Blu-ray players are released toward the end of this year. And that really makes things tough for those of us who own 4k TVs.
We have absolutely no idea what new and catalog titles will be released in 4k, or just how good the quality is going to be, and that can make buying decisions a bit difficult. Now, you would think 4k would be worth waiting for, but I can well remember when DVD and Blu-ray movies were first released. The quality of many of these was really quite bad ('Spartacus' is a great example), and it clearly showed that content was being rushed into the market place with no concern for quality. As such, I can't help thinking that 4k Blu-ray may suffer the same fate, at least at first. But I'd like to hear your opinion. Would a person for now be wise to buy a really good 1080p disc with the 4k treatment, or wait to see what the future holds? |
