Italian distributors Raro Video have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Bernardo Bertolucci's Il conformista a.k.a The Conformist, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Stefania Sandrelli. In 1970, the film won Interfilm Award - Recommendation and Journalists' Special Award at the Berlinale. Street date is October 19th.

Note: In the U.S., The Conformist is currently available on SDVD from Paramount Pictures.

Bernardo Bertolucci's visually electrifying masterpiece tells the story of 30-year-old Italian Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who's targeted by a Fascist espionage organization to lead a deadly mission in France. On his journey, Marcello, with his naive wife Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli), will see his troubled past and current moral dilemma violently collide. Bertolucci's masterful direction and his Oscar nominated screenplay are complemented by Vittorio Storaro's stunning cinematography.

This is excellent news! A friend of mine stole my Paramount DVD , so I'm hoping this will be English-friendly, or that perhaps Raro will be able to release it in the USA. I'm not even sure Paramount still have the film, as I believe their DVD has now gone out-of-print.

I don't know! He asked to borrow it, never returned it, and I have since moved away...

I wonder if this will be the same master that Paramount had access to for their DVD, or if Raro has used a different source or done further restoration. The Paramount DVD was excellent (it even had new extras), just as their DVD of 1900 was. Criterion strongly hinted on their Facebook page that they were working on 'The Conformist'. Presumably they now have the US rights, although until an announcement is made there's no way to know. Really hope someone in the UK or US releases 'Novecento' too.

The Parmopunt DVD was excellent (it even had new extras), just as their DVD of 1900 was. I think the biggest issue would be color-timing. The Paramount disc, which I have in my library, looks decent, but my understanding is that the color-timing of the transfer is quite problematic.

Have the full specifications for the release been announced yet? I'm planning a big Amazon.it order and would definitely include this in my order if it has English subtitles.

Arkadin, I would suggest that you do not invest in the Italian release. It is seriously affected by all sorts of DNR corrections.

I already ordered it.
the Arrow release is just so disappointing, and I really want to see a better version.
I guess I can always sell it if I want to, but I really want to compare the two releases.
