Default Why I won't go neutral.

It's not about money, rather shelf space. I love the PS3 because it's 1 device that does so many things. It's my PS1, PS2, PS3, DVD player, SACD player, Blu-ray player, mp3 player, occasional internet browser and sometimes video player for mp4 format videos.

If I bought an HD DVD player... EVEN at a low price, it's one device adding one function, HD dvd exclusive titles. To me that's crap. Now a 360 with HD dvd built in might entice me, since I'd get Xbox games, Xbox 360 games and HD dvd movies added but that will likely never happen.

For some people function is everything. My PS2 was my DVD player, that's partly why I bought it. I wanted a DVD player and that had a PS1 and PS2 as well. I only needed one device for my TV.

Microsoft and Toshiba, you're going to have to do better than a cheap 1080i player. You can sell it for 30 bucks, money won't be the issue, space will. Hell I sold off tons of my old DVDs since blu-ray because I no longer have space for them.

The main reason why I refuse to go neutral and support Blu-Ray exclusively is primarily the content available for the format. My preference in movies lie exclusively to those of Disney, Sony, Fox, and Lionsgate; Universal, Paramount, and Dreamworks only offer a few titles I am interested in, therefore, it does not warrant enough of a need to support HD-DVD even in the slightest. However, I will not support Warner at the time being until they have dedicated their resources to one format and fully utilized such format's features to the fullest.

it may do all that stuff. but when it comes down to it, it doesn't do most of them all too well compared to the standalone.

not trying to take anything away from it. but if you remember, the ps2 was one of the better dvd players when it was released, i don't think you can say the same today. that will slowly but surely happen with blu-ray and the ps3 as well. it sucks at web browsing, its not perfect at ps2 emultation. music playback..well..how can you get that wrong lol. i can't say if its a decent sacd player or not. i'd hope and assume so, but i can't say either way.

overall the system is awesome, break it down to each part, and it does the job, but there is better out there

Neutrality will only prolong the war. I am willing to wait for delayed gratification that will come with the eventual defeat of HD-DUD.

The sooner this thing is over the better! but waiting is much better than wasting your money now and then having to re-buy when they are released on blu.

I don't see why you'd have to rebuy them, will they self-destruct or something?

Eh, neutrality is great, I get to enjoy any movie that's available for both formats...gotta love it.

I'd like Serenity, Anchorman and Army of Darkness, but I can deal with them on DVD for now.

Everytime someone buys a HD DVD it tells the studios supporting that format that they made the right decision. Sony eventually caved on VHS and Universal will eventually cave on Blu-ray if the marketplace demands it. Every HD DVD sold makes the dream of a successful home video high definition market less likely.

I agree. Back in summer of 2006 I picked up my first high definition player, Toshiba's HD A1. I thought I would end up boxing it up and returning it, but the images flashing on my LCD were so incredible that I was firmly in HD DVD heaven. I disregarded the clumsy remote, slow load times and occasional skipping, studdering and freezing. I even overlooked the ridiculously difficult directions on firmware updates. I was in love. I reveled in the news that Samsung's first Blu-ray player and Sony's eagerly awaited release of "The Fifth Element" were both huge disappointments. I was sure that HD DVD would eventually prevail. But then something happened.

Universal went silent at CES so I took the plunge into Blu-ray with the purchase of a 60G Playstation 3. I was stunned by the beauty and simplicity of the console and its ease of operation. It performed like a star right out of the box and produced images that rivaled that of my HD A1. I was hooked. No skips, no studdering and no sluggish responses. In addition, the higher disc capacity, resistance to scratching, studio support and the single-sided discs also motivated my move towards Blu-ray.

Then my beloved Mac G3 died and I was desperate to do some morning web surfing before shopping for a new computer at the local Apple store. I simply hooked my PS3 up to the cable and wah la, I was reading the forums and posting my incendiary remarks. I then wanted to see what had changed in the world of gaming since I had parted with my Super Nintendo a number of years ago. Well, I'm still not a gamer but it was a damn surprise for me as well.

It's time to move high definition past its niche status. I happen to agree with those who believe that the only way that will happen is if HD DVD fades away. The future is Blu-ray.

I disagree with you wholeheartedly.

The PS3 is the best BD player on the market as far as I'm concerned, not to mention the cheapest. The stand-alones might have a few more features, but overall the PS3 has it where it counts (BD-Live compatibility and almost no load times).

As far as web browsing, aside from plugins like movie viewers and such, it's just as good as a PC. If you use a USB keyboard/mouse combo, it works quite well.

Music playability... do you have the latest firmware? It works perfectly for me. You can load all your music onto the PS3 directly, or stream it from a media server. I use the wireless to stream my music from my PC and have playlists set up... I can't think of how it could be much better.

Games. Well as far as I'm concerned PS3 has the best games out there. It took a little while to get AAA titles, but now we have Rachet and Clank, COD4, Guitar Hero 3, Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, etc ,etc....

Simplicity is indeed a virtue. If you already have a Blu player, adding an HD-DVD player pushes you well past the point of diminishing returns. A device which adds nothing to your A/V setup but the playback (sometimes!) of a small number of inferior quality HD movies, an even smaller number of which you'd actually want to buy.

In the BD vs HD-DVD format battle I'm confident one format will win and that'll be BD.

In SACD vs DVD-Audio for a long time I've firmly opposed HD-DVD (and refrained from buying any content) but after a couple of years I've given up my resistance. I've concluced that my hope was idle that the music I wanted was going to be released on SACD any time soon. In the end it's the content that counts for me. I've obtained a number of interesting DVD-A titles this year. Now all I need is a decent dual format player...

I won't go neutral. It's a matter of principle. After what HD-DVD pulled with Paramount, I refuse to give them any of my money.

enjoy

Actually, PS2 was a mediocre DVD player to start with. It wasn't even capable of playing movies in 480p until a few years later. But PS3 is a whole different story. It's a top-notch BD player with so much to offer besides the BD playback.
