No 4K coming, Jeunet himself has spoken. It was just an unfounded rumor, sadly:

Jeunet is such an idiot for his comments on 4K.

I'm not necessarily agreeing with him, but Terminator 2 had WAY too much changes that made Arnold a living wax figure. Some movies need to have the right transfer process to look great or else it can ruin the film experience.

He's apparently saying he hates how all 4K looks in general, purely because of how the 4K TV sets he sees in the French equivalent of Best Buy look, set to their factory default settings, with awful motion smoothing on and crazy contrast and colors. It's a surprising opinion to hear from someone who was at the cutting edge of film technology in the 1990s and 2000s. |

I did go see the 20th anniversary edition at my local AMC. It looks exactly how it's always looked. Maybe the grain appeared more coarse, but I've never seen the movie on such a large screen so that's part of it. Color grade looks identical, looks very early 2000s DI, some edge enhancement in places that may have always been part of it. I'm not really sure if they did a new 2K remaster, it just looks the same, down to the subtitles (movie is still called "AMELIE FROM MONTMARTE" instead of just Amelie, or The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain) Felt like watching my BD in a cinema, but I don't feel ripped off since it was at least A-List eligible.
The only difference I noted was the Sony Pictures Classics logo at the beginning. So this upcoming steelbook, I will wait to hear impressions or see screenshots, because I'm not sure it will look noticeably different from Lionsgate/Paramount's BD. |

Someone needs to show Jeunet the 4K of 2001 &/or eXistenz on a properly calibrated 4K TV to show what the format is truly capable of. That should change his mind.

I do like that no matter the format, the art has remained consistent all these years.
A nice touchstone to see her face smiling at me from the shelves of media sections. No doubt, in the not too distant future, the holo version will be the same. ![]() |

Just saw this at wamart and got excited thinking it was the pre-order for the 4k then saw it's a new BD. sigh. Now hearing what he's saying about hating 4k I'm a bit sad. I do get where he's coming from since he might not have seen some of the really great stuff in 4k on a good screen. I'm coming from a bad screen and it's still wonderfully filmic for most stuff I have! I mean breathtakingly wonderful for some titles. But I've also seen things, like people here say, in Best Buy where the sets are set to crap. Best Buy is shit for 4k anyway, we went there in person in 2016 to buy a new TV and the salespeople both said we don't need it and to buy a new 1080 set instead. ?? We stupidly listened to them and skipped 4k thinking we wouldn't notice the difference. Wow were they wrong. But some of the new stuff does look like video games to me, but those are mostly movies I wouldn't buy anyway. All the older movies I've seen and a lot of the newer stuff look like what I imagine the best film in theaters would've looked like (if our local theaters were actually that good! haha) they don't look like video games. But there are some new ones that I like because they look "fake". It's just another way of enjoying different kinds of movies. I mean his movies don't look like real life, which is just the reason why I adore them!
But Amelie has been the #1 spot for my 4k wishlist since day 1, so this is depressing. Especially with City of Lost Children and Delicatessen, which both look wonderful in 4k, I had hopes we'd get this this year. |

That's disappointing news about the lack of a 4K restoration or a 4K release. I pre-ordered the 2K restoration as a placeholder in case of a large price drop before release date, but I already have the Lionsgate Blu-ray from 10 years ago, so this will likely not be a day one purchase for me. In native 4K it would have been a no-brainer. I don't consider going from 2K to remastered 2K to be enough of an upgrade to double-dip right now at the current prices. For me, it will depend on reviews of the new disc & the SteelBook, and release-day price.
