3-D editing software - Blu-ray Forum

Any filmmakers here who use a 3-D editing software?

I have to buy a new PC end of the month and will be installing several of the latest production softwares. I'm no stranger to Final Cut, but when 3-D is added things get complicated.

So which software do you use and how do you like it?

I filmed my friend's wedding on a Nintendo 3DS. (This is not a paid job, this is a friendly capture from the best man.) It's the cheapest, and possibly currently the only natural camera nowadays designed for 3D footage natively that just also happens to be a 3D video game system.

I know the only zoom I got is a "walking zoom", but with a 3D screen built in, it makes for easy framing.

The process I used:

1) Get latest update from Nintendo e-shop on a separate SD card made just for the shoot. (no game data)

2) Film in 3D.

3) When editing process in bino3d.org 's program. Download is free and works on a 10 year old Macintosh. Select "frame packed" as input and first select "side-by-side Half" as an output

4) Drop processed raw footage into iMovie and edit like a 2D movie.

5) After you save it, save it as an MP4 then optionally reprocess it as Side-by-side half input and output to "left eye" and "red and cyan Dubois" separately. Save as 2 separate files

6) Burn on 3D DVD. You'll have to manually put TV in side-by-side half mode when watching it. Besides the 3DS films in standard definition. You're not losing anything with a DVD-R.

7) The 3D version is hard to web share because youtube says it needs a 3D meta tag in order to share in a 2D-compatible 3D on Youtube, and youtube says it's the responsibility of the video editor to add a 3D metatag, and iMovie currently doesn't add it.

8) By the way the 3D looks better on stereoscopic-filmed 3DS footage, than someone else's 2D cell phone footage "upconverted" to 3D of my best man speech. Even though Bino3d can convert 2D into 3D, I only do that so you don't have to fiddle with the TV settings mid-wedding. It can upconvert 2D to Red and Cyan and side-by-side half.

I wonder is there any software supporting self-making blu-ray 3D iso? I shot a 3D documentary as my graduation project (I edited on Premiere using the most primitive way), I output the left eye and right eye image and really want to put it into a 3D blu-ray.

I have a Sony 3D video camera that has two lens that records left and right full 1080 videos. I use Vegas editing software to easily edit the video. Vegas automatically reads the two streams as one file for easy editing. Only problem is I haven't found a prosumer program that allows the production of Frame-packed Blu-rays, which preserves the full 1080 resolution of both left and right videos. I have to make a Blu-ray in the side-by-side format, which discards half of the resolution of each left and right video. I believe the very expensive Sony Blu-Print may do frame packing, but its cost prohibitive.

Intel have a 3D decoder and 3D encoder as part of Quicksync on their CPUs.

Over at Doom9 forum their is a thread about Free H.264 MVC 3D Encoder which is a Windows command line interface for Quicksync.

I can confirm Vegas Pro from Version 10 on has offered frame packed (MVC) encoding, either from the create disc option directly from the timeline (which sometimes is iffy) to the more reliable MVC 1080/24 and MVC 720/60 output options in the bluray render out templates. Default 2-D view w/Vegas MVC encoding is always the left eye side.

On your signature tag, does HUD mean "Heads Up Display" or "Housing and Urban Development"? Or does it mean something not related to either?

Hud (Paramount 1963) is a feature film based on an important novel by Larry McMurtry
written before he lost his mind, directed by Martin Ritt, photographed by James Wong Howe,

Awards. Still available on DVD but so far deprived of a blu-ray.

If I remember correctly Vegas Pro has a pack of opportunities to offer. I used to film videos and edit them in Vegas.

I own copies of Magix Vegas Pro 16, DaVinci Resolve Pro 17 and Adobe Premiere CS5 and I am interested in cutting together a 3D showcase from snippets of my 3D Blu-ray Rips which are in MVC frame packed format...

Essentially what I want to do is take some of the best scenes from my 3D collection and make a 3D demo reel to wow people with third dimension eye candy...Start with the IMAX 3D countdown and splice together various highlights etc.

My question is what is the best software to use...sounds like Vegas Pro might be the one but open to other suggestions.

Also will the software allow me to do a cuts only edit and export the final render without re-compressing the output stream?

Any advice appreciated.

Hi Spectra, I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 19. It have great tools for 3D users.

Thanks keviguane...I have a couple of copies of version 15 of Cyberlink Powerdirector that came with my Pioneer BDRs...will check it out.

Do you know if it allows for cuts only edits and re-exporting as frame packed 3D without re-compressing the stream?
