Talking Woody Allen's Irrational Man

Quote:
Woody Allen has opted to shoot his next film in Rhode Island, with lensing starting in July.

Allen shot his last film, “Magic in the Moonlight,” on the French Riviera. His previous “Blue Jasmine” was shot in New York and San Francisco.

Variety reported last month that Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix had been set to star with Allen expected to write, produce and direct.

No distributor is yet on board. Sony Classics is opening “Magic in the Moonlight,” starring Stone, on July 25 and has handled distribution in the U.S. on Allen’s last six films, dating back to “Whatever Works.”

Casting on the untitled film is beginning next week with the movie is described as a “contemporary story” with academics, graduate students and middle and working-class characters.

The news was first reported by the Boston Globe.

I saw the trailer for "Magic in the Moonlight" when I saw "Chef" and I think it looks really good. Whatever Woody directs next I'll definitely watch

It's not a mansion, but yeah she does. In fact, her house is located about fifteen minutes away from me.

Well, didn't cost like $15-$20M? I'd call that a mansion. But maybe not where you are.

Anyways, if she's only 15m away, can you tell her that I would love to take her to dinner?

To be honest, you are right. It is a mansion. I'm just thinking of it from an interior layout perspective in terms of traditional mansions.

Her house is definitely huge, but there are surprisingly bigger houses near her. Also, she lives right on the side of the ocean, hence the price point. Then again, if you live anywhere within the beach, you're going to be spending a pretty penny...even for shacks. It's ridiculous.

You still didn't answer whether you'd ask her to dinner for me.

(Obviously, I'm joking around.)

Sure to be one of the more controversial films of the year at least.

I think it looks decent, Allen film's tend to be tough sells so the trailer being a bit naff doesn't surprise me. But Pheonix and Stone along with the subject makes me think this'll be the more worthwhile Woody film.

Just waiting for Jscoggins to chime in.

Isn't she like 15 years too old for Woody's taste?

Thumbs up

Modest spoilers since the trailer does not reveal the actual plot of the film, portraying it only as a cool-and-cynical-professor-romances-impressionable-student comedy:

[Show spoiler]As Irrational Man opens, philosopher Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) moves to a new town to teach at an East Coast liberal-arts college. Though widely admired, he is burned out, withdrawn, and an alcoholic. Two flirtations—one with a bored chemistry teacher (Parker Posey), the other with an eager and gifted student (Emma Stone)—fail to ignite his verve for life. At a diner, however, he overhears a distraught woman describing a biased and cruel family-court judge she is sure plans going to give custody of her children to their lout of a father. Abe is inspired to commit a perfect and, in his mind, entirely moral murder: he will improve the world by removing the odious judge from it, and no one will ever suspect him because he has no connection to his intended victim or any of his ongoing or past cases. The sinister plot puts a renewed spring in Abe's step, allowing him to relax, write, and perform in bed for the first time in a year.

This is the new film by controversial, iconic, and extremely prolific writer and director Woody Allen. It is his 45th theatrical feature by my count. He shoots one film per year, and they fall into a handful of categories: the masterpieces, the very fine ones, the mediocre ones, and, now and then, the truly dire, such as last year's Magic in the Moonlight. This largely lands in the second group. There are flaws—Allen overly belabors certain points with frequent use of voice-over, and the film's portrayal of campus life predictably bears almost no resemblance to reality—but the almost always magnetic Phoenix is a splendid lead, bringing soulful intensity to the role of Abe. At one point, the camera lingers on his tormented face after a particularly intense moment, and it is a scorching example of nonverbal screen acting. Phoenix also generates unexpectedly playful and vivid energy with both female co-stars; this is particularly important with the bright, fetching Stone since the world did not need another Allen film with a chemistry-free romance between a cynical older man and an impressionable woman many years his junior.

Irrational Man in general is buoyed by a potent concept—self-help via self-righteous criminality, with decidedly mixed results—and it pays both comic and suspense dividends throughout, building to a nicely macabre twist ending. The Dostoyevsky-indebted drama is not as airtight and riveting as two of Allen's past stories of murder and probability in an unfair world (the excellent Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point), but this is a satisfying, light companion piece to those gems.

I liked it a lot. In fact, I have liked every Woody Allen film beginning with Melinda and Melinda, including the ones the critics didn't like. Whereas, between Manhattan and Melinda and Melinda his only films I liked were Hannah and Her Sisters and Mighty Aphrodite. As far as I'm concerned, he's on quite a roll. At this point I am not going to let critics keep me away from his films.
