Default Why do some professional reviewers still think PQ is best in the theater?

I dont know how many times I've read a review of a bluray and the reviewer says something to the effect "we are finally seeing the movie the way it was presented in theaters". It doesnt seem to matter if the movie in question was 70 yrs old. What kind of crappy displays are they watching the movies on? There is no way in hell 2001,the Searchers or Wizard of Oz looked even half as good as they look on blu. I saw a lot of movies growing up in the 70s,80, & 90s and they all look better on blu than they ever did at the movies. Even if I go to the best theater in town (Las Vegas) and see the latest blockbuster the blu will blow it away.I know 35mm film has probably 2x the resolution as 1080 but 1080 on a 40-65" screen> than film on a 30 ft screen. Anyone else agree?

I saw 2001 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, in the early 90's, and it looked amazing! You could clearly see the blemishes and razor cuts on the actors' faces! (Remember, it was shot on 70mm.) No way is a Blu-ray disc presented on the best HDTV going to top that. Sorry. It's a close second, though.

If that were the case then movie studios would release movies straight to Blu Ray. There would be no point of releasing films in theaters. The whole purpose of Blu Ray is to recreate the cinematic experience.

I guess it depends what quality prints the theater gets. If its a 2nd or 3rd generation print, it won't look that great at your local cinema. Since blu-rays are transferred straight from the master, its conceivable that they could look better than a cinema print.

My theater I've never sat there and remarked, not one time, that whatever I was watching was great or even good. They look OK. I'm going to surmise that when a reviewer refers to this theater look what they're getting at is the Directors intent for the film to look, not how it actually appeared in theaters.

I see your from Mi. Are you near Det? If so most of the movies I saw growing up in Det area. Your theaters on average arent even on par with what we have in Vegas. Here is an example for you I saw the Bourne Supremacy at Star gratiot in Roseville Mi when it came out. The same movie looked a lot more colorful, sharper and three dimensional on my lcd. Same thing for monsters vs aliens compaired to a theater in Ohio this year. Need another? I took my wife and daughter to Wizard of Oz 70th anniversary for the 1 night showing and it looked good (probably better than anyone saw it in 1939) yet 1 week later I see it look even better in my house on blu.
Im not talking about screen size or even front projectors. Im talking about pure image quality.

The reason you think that is because LCD produce unaturaly bright colors. The theaters present films in natural sharp images as if you were looking through a window. if thats what you like then thats fine. You have to realize its only your opinion. That doesnt mean its true.

I would love to have seen that, and Im sure they got their shite together for that presentation in Hollwood. Still the hddvd (dont own it on blu) looked mighty fine. I guess I'll have to take your word for it,even if I have my doubts.

Yeah, your LCD is producing a different type of image also (is it calibrated?)

I prefer the look of projected images, and CRT displays to that of LCD or Plasma, although CRT has gone the way of the dinosaur

Yeah I live in Dearborn Heights. The Star theaters are crap around here the AMC Livonia and Emagine Canton are the only theaters I mess with. Well Henry Ford IMAX too. Emagine uses those Christine DLP projectors beautiful picture.

Trust me I dont have mine set on torch or anything. Here is another example if you got an Ultimate Electronics or similar high end electronics with a calibrated Pioneer Kurro hooked up to a bluray. I watched almost half of Qantum of Solace there. I have never seen a theatrical presentation look that good.

I still have my Pioneer Elite pro 710 64" and yes it looks closer to what you will see at a good theater ( in bluray of course) but it cant match the new plasmas and lcds imo.

I know I cant be the only one who has thought the bluray they just watched blew away what they saw at the theater. Yet another example is the last Pirates movie.I thought it was kind of boring in the theater yet I still want to own this on blu because it looks so amazing .
Heck even the tier rating system on bluray.com states 0 as being better than the theatrical presentation, so I know it cant be just me.

A few possibilities. Some are: The pic theater is using a weak globe or purposely dimming the globe. Projectionist unintentionally has the projector out of focus. Your visual perception at the greater distance from the screen is losing it's sharpness.

sw louisiana theater's suck. Hard to enjoy the movie with how bad it looks now. I know its just certian areas but its a limit of viewing choice. I dont even go to the movies anymore because its just not enjoyable. And they will let just about anyone in there, drunks who smell of throw up.. loud people.. babies.. if blu where to bring that to the table then i wouldnt buy it.

of course thats a joke, but these days you have to include that when you talk about "the theater experience"

Yes sir, the Emagine theaters in Canton and Novi and the AMC 20 in Livonia are the only theaters around here that get my business. Excellent places to see a movie.

The first one is a possibility. The second one is an unfortunate sign of the times where its hard to find someone thats not slacking off.We have all seen a movie out of focus or the sound too low. As for the third I thankfully have excellent eye sight and always try to sit in the sweet spot. Rather no I am speaking from a lifetime of movie watching not a few movies here and there.
You guys have to adress the valid point I made about the tier rating system on this site.Long before I even knew about bluray.com your own rating system states 0 to better than the theatrical presentation in PQ. Someone should at least adress this.
