that depends. depending on your model of tv you probably already have the Amazon Prime and Netflix 4K apps built in, so taht's not really a benefit to you.
If you like the OTHER features of firetv, like mirroring from a fire tablet, the voice command, playing games, etc. then go for it. The 4K is more to make sure that people with 4K tvs CAN use the FireTV rather than provide a real "value add." A FireTV without 4K is basically useless for somebody with a 4K tv, since they would have to use the TV's apps to get 4K content from Prime or Netflix anyways. |

I have the original Fire TV and received the new one yesterday from Amazon. What I love about this box is the wi-fi coverage is excellent. Even on my 2nd floor, I get 1080p streams via wireless. My router is downstairs. Also, these boxes are extremely fast while browsing. I don't have a 4K tv, but the addition of Alexa is nice. It's the exact same size box as the 1st gen. Unfortunately, the tutorial on the 4K version is longer and I don't think there is a way to skip it during the setup.
FYI, if you are planning on getting the "gaming" version, it DOES NOT come with the voice remote. I assumed it did, but it's an extra $30. I have the Apple TV and have tried the Roku and Google Nexus player and the Fire TV blows them away in terms of wi-fi signal and navigating speed. I'm sure the new Apple TV will see improvements, but I think overall, the Fire is my favorite streaming device. |

The remote on the 4K unit is a tad longer than the 1st gen. It's also a bit more difficult to navigate with. The directional buttons sometimes have to be pressed harder, and it can be tough to get the battery cover off the back. For me, the 1st gen remote is more comfortable to use.

They've temporarily dropped the price on the new Fire TV to $79 ($59 if you have Amazon Student) in case anyone is interested...

Yeah, I get around 21-22 Mbps in my media room(my connection is supposed to be up to 100 Mbps, but clearly that's not the case). I've been able to stream Amazon 4k content on my TV without any buffering issues so far.

The new Fire TV has been plagued with bugs and other issues. It was clearly not ready for release. Luckily, it appears Amazon is working on various problems that will hopefully fix the awful remote problems and system freezes.

All I've been hearing is problems with Dolby Digital Plus not working for apps besides Amazon Instand Video or something along those lines. I'm considering picking one up so I can stop using my PS3 when I'm not using it for Blu-ray or gaming purposes, so I'm hoping the extra wait in November will fix the bugs they've been having.
Haven't heard anything bad about the remote, though. |

The remote loses connection to the box and you have to unplug the device and replug to get it to work. Amazon has pulled the stock while they work on the numerous issues. The other big problem for me is the volume is much lower vs the 1st gen box. But that is being fixed too. They are showing an 11/4 date for new stock. I would think all the issues are ironed out.
The good news is the hardware is fine, so a software update or two will correct everything. The 1st gen box definitely improved from updates. |

I wish these type of devices would have actual storage, and download stuff you want to watch, so you can, say, I don't know, download on a slower link at full 4k when you are away at work, and then say, enjoy it un-stuttering in 4K at home when you watch it later? Is that such a revolutionary idea?
