Default '54' (1998) Director's Cut NOW STREAMING!

Not sure if anyone was aware of this, but the long rumored and sought after director's cut of Mark Christopher's 1998 film '54' has finally debuted on most streaming services (not sure if a Blu Ray/DVD will follow, though one with some bonus features & a commentary would certainly be welcomed).

Featuring what is arguably Mike Myers finest performance (as studio runner Steve Rubell), the movie was mangled by Miramax after a couple of disasterous test screenings, which saw a great deal of material (including a subplot regarding Ryan Phillippe's sexuality) left on the cutting room floor. However (per IMDB) "In February 2015, a 105 minute director's cut of the film, which includes over 30 minutes of footage from the original shoot which has never been seen in any previous cut, and deleting all but a few seconds of the studio-dictated reshot footage, was screened in the Panorama section of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. Director Mark Christopher has claimed that this version will be released on DVD and digitally some time in 2015." And it looks like it's finally here. I got my download from VUDU, but I'm told it was also released on amazon's video service.

And so it begins. A Streaming-only release (for now). If this were a film I'd want to purchase on physical media I'd be a little worried right now.

I'm wondering if Miramax just didn't want to pony up the cash for a new physical release, even though Lionsgate currently owns the rights to the film (and the current piss poor blu release)

It's been out for a while and I bought it from iTunes the day it released. I have a fondness for the movie, and I liked this version even more. I'd gladly pick it up on BD, but I didn't want to wait.

It's not "only" streaming, you can download a PHYSICAL file through iTunes for $9.99.

So there are 4 cuts of the movie out there (3 if you don't count the WP)

Theatrical 93 min
Extended 100 min
Director's cut 106 min
Workprint 121 min

That's a blatant rip-off and I know where to get it properly instead of supporting their price gouging. Including their small filesizes. Trust me, iTunes is never installed on any computers I own, never has and never will be. Will never support it.
Again, this needs to be moved to the proper forum.

A physical file with apple DRM, which is no better than streaming imo.

There's a lot of rough footage taken from a VHS work print which is why i don't think this will get a blu-ray release.

I think the best chance it has is if there's a 54 special edition blu-ray release that includes this cut on a bonus disc or in the special features. Even though some scenes are VHS quality I would still love to have a physical copy.

Highly recommend for anyone who hasn't seen this cut yet to do so, it's a major improvement over the theatrical. Miramax totally butchered this film for it's theatrical release.

A "blatant" rip off? Just because you don't like Apple? Hyperbole much?

Like it or not, this streaming and downloads are the future. Will this ever hit blu? It was a flop and probably not worth the time and money for a studio to physically author and print discs, print inserts, package it, and ship it, then get stuck with overstock. Welcome to 2015.

Loved this version, it was practically a new movie. I don't let the format dictate whether or not I'll watch a film. If this was released solely on VHS and I wanted to see it, I would.

I'm curious about this movie now. Anyone know if the VUDU version (or any other version) is also UV? Is there a way to tell?

I assume this doesn't mean Netflix, Hulu, etc., right? Rather, you're referring to rentals or purchases on iTunes, VUDU, etc.?
