Default HT in a box recommendations

Since I'm still a poor student and just dropped nearly $4k in getting my XBR4 with a PSP, etc., a standalone receiver and speakers aren't making their way into my xmas budget.

So, I'm looking for some recommendations for a ~1000W 5.1 system, but really don't know much about what's available.

Salesguy at Futureshop suggested the Sony DAVHDX466. My dad went shopping around and said he really liked the AQ out of the LG E932TB. What can anyone here recommend? My budget is around $500 CAN, although that's slightly flexible. I'm probably going to hold off until boxing day, but I want to have made up my mind well in advance.

On a side note, I'm also anticipating that having a receiver will improve the A/V sync problems found with Guitar Hero 3 (vs. TV speakers). Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks for the input.

Couldn't agree more, get the Onkyo. I bought one of its predecessor's back in 2000. 7 years later its still going strong, and it really only lacks HDMI (which may not have existed then) and multi-channel PCM (only came with Stereo PCM). The Onkyo HT-SR800 appears to take care of my only issues... Issues that going blu happily created
I'll either be getting this setup, or a receiver in the near future to "fix" everything.

Great prices on these on Amazon.com. My folks live on the border, so this just may be possible after all, IF they're willing to sit in a car for hours at the border.

The price differential is over $400 between US and Canadian prices for this item ($849 CAD). Plus, neither Best Buy or Futureshop carry Onkyo products....arg

There's "the source, by circuit city", essentially a rebranded Radio Shack. They don't really classify as a reputable electronics store - I wouldn't buy more than batteries from them, without certainty that I was being ripped off.
