Not as good as last year's Joe, but still one of my favourite films of the year so far. Really strange little film, even by Green's usual standards. I really like how different it is from what people might expect, and has a near-perfect ending...plus the script was written by somebody completely new to this kind of work. There are some great interviews about this film (particularly the one with Green):

Manglehorn Blu-ray PREVIEW

Another great film from David Gordon Green

Fantastic performance from Pacino and a top-notch soundtrack from Explosions In The Sky/David Wingo.

I've got to say, I'm a big fan of the director. Both his comedy and serious work. I am one of the few fans of Your Highness.

A very talented director with an excellent style. A number of his films have qualities that I find to be quite similar to those of Gus Vant Sant's early work -- they are very intimate projects, with notable depth and authenticity. You can also tell that there is a special connection between him and the locations where he shoots. He understands the South and you can feel it in many of his films. This is also the case with many of Van Sant's films -- Paranoid Park, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy -- which ooze the Pacific Northwest atmosphere.

David Gordon Green is one of the best young directors we have, a true original, but he tends to stay in the shadows. It is unfortunate because he is much better than Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach, and the rest of the overhyped directors that are typically praised by the media here.

D.G.G is not a great director in my view, but he is pretty good. Manglehorn features Pacino's best performance since Donnie Brasco, but the script is ordinary and the film is rather unambitious.

It's still worth a look or two though.

For a film starring someone like Pacino, at this point in his career, I doubt you're going to get any more ambitious I'm afraid. Also, you've got to have a lot of balls to cast Harmony Korine in your film.

Agreed it's his best since Donnie Brasco (if you ignore The Insider and Insomnia).

I forgot about The Insider, but I think he is better in Manglehorn than he is in Insomnia.
