I imagine Hidden Blade won't be too far behind as it is also a Panorama property in HK. Love & Honor was released by a different distributor on DVD in HK so there is more uncertainty with that one. I hope Panorama somehow got the rights to distribute the Blu-ray in HK.

Wonder when this will be listed in DDDHouse? Haven't ordered anything fm PlayAsia so I'm not too sure if I can rely on them.

This is not the same company who released PS and OATIC. This disc will likely be a port of the Japanese disc, which is a solid release.

Got my copy today. I will hopefully watch it very soon. Sampled a few scenes and it looks very solid. Audio is Japanese TrueHD 5.1 (16bit). English subtitles appear to be very good. No extras. BD25.
It is Region A locked. I uploaded the cover on its page. |

The subtitles are pretty good. Easy to follow. There were correct uses of question and exclamation points. Sentences were generally broken up by question marks, exclamation points, and periods. However, many of the single sentences did not end in period marks. Some ended in ellipsis and continued on, but would not finish with a period. Periods generally only came when someone said two separate sentences.
PQ was very good. Nice detail and color. The biggest problem however was the elevated black levels. This problem apparently plagued the Japanese HDDVD, and I assume the same transfer used for that was used for the Japanese Blu-ray and ergo the HK Blu-ray. Blacks would appear as more grayish than true black. I don't know if the problem is source related or a problem between Japanese and US TV settings. I will try later on to play around with the settings on my PC to see if I can get anywhere near truer blacks. Edit- I just saw an Amazon JP post for the HDDVD that says the black level being poor can be attributed to the way the film was shot. AQ was very solid. Dialogue is clear and it packs a punch at certain parts. I would recommend this disc highly. I don't see Tartan UK or First Look US releasing a version anytime soon. The disc is solid despite the elevated black levels. Last edited by AnimeOnBlu; 02-27-2011 at 10:30 PM. |

Would someone post some screens from this blu-ray? I haven't seen any anywhere.
One of my favorite movies. I'm wondering if this has the same black level as the 'Twilight Time Movies' blu-ray release. |

I haven't seen any caps of the HK release, but reviews of the U.S. release universally note the weak black levels, and Twilight Time themselves have said that their version looks the same as the HK release. Given that the HK Blu can be had for less than half the price of Twilight Time's, I would say there's no reason to go with the U.S. disc unless you really want that isolated score.

The HK disc doesn't have any true blacks either but I don't think it's quite as bright as the TT release. I can't say for sure as it's been some time since watching it. But I do have the disc here somewhere, so I'll double check. Just need to find it first...
![]() Edit: Actually, caps-a-holic already has a comparison up between the releases. Well, according to the screens, my assumption was correct. For what it's worth, I do know that the HK release has had some DNR applied to it compared to the Japanese disc. Otherwise, when it comes to the gamma levels and color saturation, it's the same.
