Default Film festivals / Special screenings in India

Since the OSIANAMA thread previously posted focused exclusively on the German films festival this weekend, I thought I'd start a new general thread on film festivals and any special film screenings in India.

The coming week from Tue-Sun OSIANAMA is putting up a festival of Alfred Hitchcock movies at Liberty cinema, Mumbai. I'm pasting the schedule for this festival here. The screenings are for FREE, just turn up and ask for a ticket and watch movies in the loveliest old-skool cinema in this city.

Great! How lucky you Mumbai guys

In 2000 when theaters were updating to Dolby Digital/DTS in my city (some were already). A theater had Amitabh week, which included movies like Kaala Patthar, Sholay, Trishul, AAA, Zanjeer, Yaarana, Namal Halaal, etc. I guess 2-3 movies everyday for one week (means no repeats) but I couldn't watch any single movie because of busy schedule. Now I regret why I missed the opportunity to experience some good movies in original soundtracks (Kaala Patthar, Sholay )

Do you have any idea where these theaters get prints from? I have an opportunity to possibly show some Bollywood films but no idea where to find materials

I don't know how it was in 2000 but a lot of cinemas have now shifted over to digital projection, so the sources and screenings are from digital files, possibly sourced from the production companies or home video companies, once you clear the rights for screening.

Yeah looks like a nice slate, although I'd say having 3pm screenings on weekdays is almost a guarantee for empty halls. Will try to catch a couple of these (not Mughal-e-Azam though, I would probably be dead by the time the film ended ). They should have had Last Tango in Paris instead of Apocalypse Now, where Brando has a rather small part. Granted, once he comes on screen he dominates it, but he dominates Tango as well and that's a much more brave and involved performance.

@prepress:
Definitely not reel. The screenings are usually from MKV files played off a hard drive. Visual quality depends on whether the source for making the file was DVD or HD. I expect that for most of the vintage Hindi movies it will be DVD (possible that MeA may have HD master available from Shemaroo).

I recall BFI (London) screening Dilip Kumar movies a few years back. MEA, Madhumati, Andaz, Amar were reels - Footpath was DVD (horrible DVD at that). Madhumati was magical to watch ... breathtaking visuals. I haven't been able to watch any of the DVDs of Madhumati since watching a 35mm screening. MEA has a new print (original b/w version with the original colour scenes) made by BFI. That could well be the version that might be used (one would hope).
