I really want to see the Norwegian film "The Wave" ("Bølgen) but won't be able to make it. It looks like it will be amazing - check out the trailer! Hopefully it will be out on blu ray sooner than Kon Tiki took - even though I understand a lot of Norewgian I still like my English subs to help me!

This will mark the first year since 2004 that I haven't been to the LFF, and my first in five that I haven't covered it as press. I've always had an amazing time in the past, and would have loved to have caught Cemetery Of Splendour and Arabian Nights nice and early, but I just couldn't be bothered with bouncing between friends sofas and cheap hotels this time 'round!

I used to attend the film festival for a good few years.
Enjoyed Sheila's surprise film there on quite a few occasions
Saw Meet the parents with Jay Roach in attendance
The Insider with Michael Mann in attendance, actually sat in the row behind me and came up at the end of the film
Cop out with Sylvester Stallone and Ray Liotta in attendance
Long kiss goodnight with Geena Davis,Renny Harlin and Craig Baxley in attendance
Nothing really that makes me want to trek up to Leicester Square to watch these days, managed to watch Black Mass when I was in the States a few weeks back

So far seen Trumbo and High-Rise where are both great, High-Rise is my favourite film of the year so far and will try to see it again on Sunday. I asked Cranston a question at the press conference, about 26 minutes it's about if blacklisting is still happening

Nice one. Looking forward to both of them. He gave quite a long answer for such a short question! Probably some of their first press for this film so they're not quite sick of it yet...hehe.

Has High-Rise got a UK release date yet? I would've thought it would hit the UK first, but StudioCanal sometimes drag their feet on certain films (they did release Under the Skin quite quickly though, which I was grateful for).

I think I read that it was coming next March, but can't find anything online clarifying that. I love the book but the negative reaction within my circle of friends coming out of today's press show at the LFF has severely muted my anticipation for the movie.

I've also read mixed things. Wheatley films are hit and miss for me personally. However, the one I disliked at first but soon appreciated somewhat was A Field in England. So yeah, I'm bound to admire it in some way but it remains to be seen whether I actually like the film as a whole. I'm cautiously optimistic, basically.

I really like Kill List and Down Terrace, but didn't get on with Sightseers or A Field In England. On paper I do think he's a good match for High Rise, so will be seeing it, but can't help but feel a little deflated by today's reaction. I'm not sure where you are in the country but I have a feeling it's going to be screening in Leeds next month at the festival. It's a shame that it doesn't have US distribution yet as we're entering screener season for those of us in critics circles and I figured it'd be a shoe-in for consideration.

I really don't trust most critics, they are a bunch of middle tossers and most of my favourite films they hate. I loved the film but I know most people will hate it, I was the only person who clapped and I didn't like Kill List and I quite liked A Field in England. I also wrote up a review earlier http://thepeoplesmovies.com/2015/10/...15-lff-review/

High Rise comes out on the 11th of March

I don't particularly hold much stock in "critics" as a collective force in any real sense, it just so happens that many of my best friends happen to be film critics and so I value their feelings to varying degrees based on a number of things.

What's a "middle tosser" btw?

One step up from a bottom tosser?

Saw TRUMBO last night. Enjoyable enough but way too long and I felt the tone was annoyingly inconsistent, lurching from light comedy to Oscar-baiting drama. I've seen a few films now about McCarthyism's effect on Hollywood. It'd be more interesting to see a film about its wider effects on "normal" people. Awful as the whole episode was, Dalton Trumbo not getting to pick up his Oscar was hardly the most tragic of its effects; though no doubt the makers of the film find the prospect horrifying.

BTW, shouldn't this be in the Movies forum?

I thought Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck was a great exploration of McCarthyism and its effects on both the media and everyday working people.

Dalton Trumbo was an interesting character though - I've read about him before - but I do agree this is clear Oscar bait. The Academy notoriously appreciates films about filmmaking, particularly if they're widely accepted by critics. I just want to see it for the cast really (especially Cranston and Louis CK), and the fact that Jay Roach has made very entertaining political biopics in the past (most notably Game Change). Not sure the guy playing Kirk Douglas is convincing though, from the trailer I've seen.
