Default Problem with Samsung Player

Hey guys -

I'm having some trouble with my Samsung (E5900) player and I'm wondering if anyone here has any tips.

For the past month or so, I've noticed that the player struggles with discs manufactured within the past 1-2 years. It takes a long time attempting to load the discs, and then ejects them displaying a message that the disc cannot be read. I figured out that after power cycling or factory resetting the player I can get the discs to load, however it takes a long time. This is also an issue on discs from outside North America (region free discs that have worked fine in the past).

Additionally, I've noticed that on occasion the screen will flash with white pixelation. Usually if it does it once it'll happen a few more times throughout the duration of the movie/show thereafter. This is likely a problem with my HDMI cord though, as I tested on another player and it did the same thing.

After a Google search I read that Samsung is notorious for not releasing firmware updates on certain models after some time has passed, and that could be the reason why the newer discs won't load and old discs are fine. Could this be the case? I'd hate to have to buy a new player as this one is less than 3 years old.

I'd greatly appreciate any input or solutions from similar experiences. Thanks!

All 3 of my Samsung players do on occasion go through a cannot play disc / invalid media phase, but if I turn them off, they're usually alright (luckily I have another player next to the one in the living room). Last night I played a DVD, ejected the disc with the remote, which as usual did a double take and tried to reload the disc, I was presented with the cannot play disc message. The stupid machine had been playing the disc for about an hour before I ejected it!

I think it's some kind of weird glitch with the menu and how it handles different media. When the error pops up it doesn't realise there's a DVD or BD in the drive and we get an error.

It shouldn't take you more than a reboot to get the player working again, anything more than unplugging it, I'd say it's something to be concerned about. My oldest Samsung player is now obsolete, it hasn't had any firmware updates in a few years.

Samsung makes disposable BD players.

Nobody, not even Sony or Panny, keep their BD players updated past 2 years.

Oppo is the exception. Even then, the X0/X3 models started coughing up a lung.

My Samsung F5900 is over 2 years old and still gets firmware updates.

If Samsung blu-ray players were as good as their mobile phones, they'll have the best blu-ray players in the world.

Well she finally won't play Blu anymore. Plays everything else. So I jumped shipped to LG. Got a great new unit, BP735. Plays everything the Samsung did. Here's the big difference, the LG plays DTS HD 7.1 from MKVs. Which is a big plus. Also streams 7.1 wirelessly from my computer. Gonna miss the old unit. But gotta move on.

You'd need to do a firmware update on the player... ALL players need that. The first Avengers BD wouldn't play until an update either. Updates are critical. Bluray is still an evolving format. If you cannot update via wifi or ethernet, go the the manufacturer's website and there will be instructions on how to put the update on a USB stick and then to the player. Usually there are very specific steps to that so make sure you follow the step by step.

I don't suppose any of you have had their Samsung player make this dreadful high-pitched whine too...?

I have a Magnovox blu-ray player that I bought from Wal-Mart probably 5 years ago. Updated once (years ago). I have never had a problem playing anything.
