List of Theatrical 3D Conversion Teams and their Respective Films - Blu-ray Forum

Playing a big role in much of today's theatrical 3D, these conversion studios have created some impressive 3D conversions over the years.

While it's difficult to simulate the natural stereo 3-D beauty of strong native/filmed 3D, it's wise to consider the importance of 3D conversion studios in keeping 3D alive and well with a large library of 3D titles since 2009's Avatar's resurgence of the stereo 3D market in theaters and at home.

At the same time, the quality of the 3D results makes a difference in how audiences respond to 3D. A strong 3D film tends to get more praise for the 3D effects

, while mild 3D films often increase mainstream negativity against 3D films

. This is true of native and converted films, as both can offer a range from mild, medium to strong 3D layers, volume, depth and pop outs.

The 3D results may vary in the 3D conversion work, with some films being great examples of stereo 3D with strong 3D much of the way, while other films offering milder and disappointing 3D conversions (closer to 2D), likely dependent on the film's budget that the conversion team had to work with, as well as the team's software and skill levels.
For a stronger 3D conversion, it costs more to offer greater separation of the 3D layers and volume of the objects/characters, requiring more empty space to be filled in carefully from the larger shift, compared to a mild 3D film which only requires a tiny shift from the dual images, one original 2D file duplicated, then the other duplicated film adjusted and offset frame by frame, so when they're combined and edited, a stereo 3D effect is the result.

The good news is, 3D conversion software advances have greatly contributed to the improvement of 2D to 3D conversions since the early days of 2009, allowing for much finer details to be given the 3D effect, including separation of softer edges, fine strands of hair, and incredibly complex layers of particles such as rain or debris, as well as better volume of faces and more.
