United Kingdom The Story of Ricky (88 Films) Blu-ray - September 27th, 2021

Pre-order at Amazon.co.uk HERE

Director Lam Ngai Kai (Erotic Ghost Story/Saga of the Phoenix), brings us a tour de force story of incarceration and injustice laced with super charged action sequences and mounting prison-based tension. Set in the year 2001, where all correctional facilities have been privatised, martial artist Ricky finds himself victim to the corrupt system when he is found guilty of the manslaughter of an infamous crime boss. Once in jail he must fight for his own survival when he is thrown into a world of enemies vying for his blood.

Based on the Japanese Manga by Masahiko Takajo and Tetsuya Saruwatari, this cinematic adaptation also follows closely in the footsteps of a host brutal prison dramas like Brute Force (1947), Escape from Alcatraz (1979) and Scum (1979) but of course it’s all delivered with a distinctive Hong Kong style powerhouse punch

I presume this film will be part of their Category III line-up? Especially considering it shares the same price point as the other two (Erotic Ghost Story, Robotrix).

Either way, exciting none-the-less.

Was hoping they would release this. Didn't pick up the Mediumrare on account of apparent audio issues and this title seems right up 88's alley.

I saw this at one of the Fantasia festival in Montreal. I went there with two of my friends, one of which was one of those serious film afficionado. We laugh so much, both because of the movie and seeing his reaction to it...

The Story of Ricky is preposterously entertaining. Looking forward to it getting some good treatment from 88.

A new audio commentary by the many excellent Asian cinema experts they've used for their 88 Asia line would be very welcome. The one on the Mediumrare was about 20 years old, they talk about the 'recently released' Ichi the Killer

I am in, will wait to pre-order when it is up on the 88 Site. Quite the run of HK movies coming from 88 and Eureka from next month.

Never bought the Mediumrare release, had the HKL so I'm all in for this.

Strange coincidence, when Robotrix was announced I posted hoping for more Cat III like Story of Ricky, then it was announced like a day later. Say, I would really love if someone released John Woo's The Killer...one can dream

I remember catching this in the cinema back in 2002. Found a post with some of my thoughts...

Sadly none of those classic Woo's will be released by anyone anytime soon. The rights holders have no interest in licensing them out.

Can't wait to yeet the Mediumrare BD. I think that's the only time I've seen a BD/DVD booklet with text copied directly from Wikipedia.
