Here are Spielbergs 20 favorite movies. I guessed his #1, because he typically screens it for the crew the night before principal photography. I didn't guess his #3, but as it's my personal favorite film of all time, I am understandably delighted. Some other surprises...here you go... 1. Its a Wonderful Life Frank Capra (1946) 2. The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola (1972) 3. Fantasia -Walt Disney (1940) 4. A Guy Named Joe Victor Fleming (1943) 5. Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn (2014) 6. War of the Worlds Byron Haskin (1953) 7. Psycho Alfred Hitchcock (1960) 8. 2001: A Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick (1968) 9. Lawrence of Arabia David Lean (1962) 10. Untouchable Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano (2011) 11. The Dark Knight Christopher Nolan (2008) 12. The 400 Blows François Truffaut (1959) 13. Day for Night François Truffaut (1973) 14. Citizen Kane Orson Welles (1941) 15. Captains Courageous Victor Fleming (1937) 16. The Best Years of Our Lives William Wyler (1946) 17. The Searchers John Ford (1956) 18. Tootsie Sydney Pollack (1982) 19. Seven Samurai Akira Kurosawa (1954) 20. Dumbo Walt Disney (1941) |

Interesting. Some real surprises on here. Guardians of the Galaxy at #5?? What the what???
Never seen "Untouchable", so I'll have to remedy that immediately. Seen the rest, of course, but only 2001: A Space Odyssey makes it definitively onto my own "Top Ten Faves of All Time" -- which is all I ever calculate for sure, since I love so many flicks and it gets muddy from #10-20... but Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Godfather would certainly be in the running for some of those slots. My own Top Twenty would include four Spielberg-directed flicks: Raiders of the Lost Ark at #1, Close Encounters of the Third Kind at #3, Empire of the Sun at #5, and Jaws probably at #13-ish... and then the Spielberg-produced Back to the Future might just squeeze in there too, around #18-ish? |

Spielberg is an emotional guy, he communicates via emotions in his films. He quotes a lot of those filmmakers in his own work...Fleming, Ford, Wyler, Kubrick, Lean, Disney...None of those films surprise me to find on his list. I'd love to see his top 50 favorites. I imagine Curtiz and Tati would make the cut.

There's three on there that seem woefully out of place with the others, but what the heck, it's his list.
Every favorite movie list is always like that. There'll be some obvious choices that everyone expects, and then there's some out of left field, personal choices that surprise. My own lists always baffle people, too, because among obvious stuff like "Citizen Kane", "The Godfather", "Jaws", "GoodFellas", or "Psycho", there's always something odd, too, like "An American Werewolf in London" or "The Last Temptation of Christ". I'll see someone with a list that has Kubrick and Kurosawa but also "Anchorman" or something like that, LOL. Whatever, we like what we like. And Spielberg's no different. |
